General explanation of natural selection and how it leads to evolution:

"Imagine a group of insects. One half of the group is green, and the other half is red. The green insects tend to live longer than the red insects because they can use their color to blend in with their surroundings and avoid predators. Because they live longer, the green insects have more children and gradually overtake the red insects until the entire group is green. That's natural selection. The insects with the trait that helped survival outlived the insects that didn't have it. When a species changes so much due to natural selection over time that it barely resembles what it used to be, we say that the species has evolved and become a new species."

Probably not the best explanation, but it covers the basics.
