How does American college sports fandom work?

I'm being serious, the pro sports seem like soulless money spinners that you can pick and choose but university sports seem to be more sovlfvl, aside from attendance, how is school allegiance chosen? Are you born into fandom familially? Is it your birth region like pro sports? I do know a few schools have identity affiliations
