how/why did trans issues and proving gender doesn't exist take over feminism in USA?

Simple. They're the most successful crybullies of all time. They are men who target women for bullying if they don't want their spaces overrun by hulking ogre troons. They combine typical male violence with intersectionality bullshit to shut down any criticism of their atrociously shitty behavior.

Hm I see. I just read a thread on a reddit page with a long argument about why you're a shitlord if you're a straight man who doesn't want to settle down with a trans woman.
I feel like ..I've had some trans friends known to me for years, and I always, since the 1990s, thought of myself as very pro transgender. But now I'm not sure. I guess I don't get why socialised gender stuff is the driving force now, other than that it's trendy and written by authors who are popular in colleges.
Also, on Reddit, it's not trans people saying this stuff or obsessing over trans issues. It's "cis" male and female feminists obsessing over trans people for some reason. Often an actual trans person comes along and disagrees with their "gender is social" stuff, and is tactfully ignored.

In this day and age, trans people (more specifically, trans women; trans men are apparently higher than cis women, somehow?) are the lowest on the bar in American politics. So instead of focusing on problems their own gender might have, cis men & female feminists decide to focus on the more oppressed & make everything out to be a negative in some way. But then if someone slightly disagrees (or if they say something as simple as "you need dysphoria to be trans"), the whole narrative is changed and they're just as bad as a cis person. There's no "agree to disagree" option.

They're all squawking and barking about nothing. Gender does and does not exist, but it's intertwined with sex. Gender will always be seen within the context of heteronormative relationships. So, if a troon puts on skirts, and says, I hate men, well, they're a hypocrite. Skirts and female clothing have always been attractive to MEN from a reproductive standpoint. Gender is an elaborate result of social interactions between men and women, which has its basis in mating. Feminists are right that gender may not exist from an objective standpoint, but troons are wrong if they claim that they're feminine or female because they put on a skirt, yet they still act, look, and sound like retarded straight or gay man.

If you want a real answer, the answer is that Feminism as an ideology is pretty damn mainstream and prevalent to the point that's its become massively diverse in opinions and nuances.
There are still the core elements that are consistent (let women be equal pls, pls no stereotypes, pls no rape or sexual assault, consent is yay), but there is a huge range in diversity of thought that you can find feminism that excludes/accepts trans people, thinks women should return/subvert to traditional roles, etc.
As a topic of discussion the most major and pressing examples of institutional sexual discrimination are gone (in comparison to the shitshow we had in the 50s and 60s where things like this were normal: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1pUXH1Bye88) so feminists have a lot of other things to contend and talk about. Some focus their attention to social leftovers from a bygone and sexist era (men taking advantage of vulnerable men and women in politics, tech and entertainment for example), some are focused on worldwide issues in other countries (female genital mutilation, subjugation of women in third world countries, sexual slavery etc.).
Now to as why Feminism seems kinda crazy right now, its mostly because the focus and schema of what people think of feminists on the internet (and this site in particular) is pretty tainted by whats shared on the Internet. Nobody is really interested on what feminists actually think, they're just looking for a way to laugh at Trigglypuff and declare "All Feminists are Literally Cancer Part 5". If you for example go down the list of things that Feminists want without calling it Feminism, most people would agree with nearly every single point.

You probably are largely pro-tranny since you aren't screeching at your friends to stop being trannies (I've seen trans-exclusionary type people wind up doing that when a friend comes out). Feeling that maybe people are too zealous about certain things isn't anti-trans as much as your typical SJW will want to suggest.
The redditors you speak of (alongside certain elements on tumblr) are holier-than-thou pseudo-intellectuals who have latched onto the issue to stroke their "good person" egos.

Some of it is journalists desperate for the next thing to go viral, throwing gasoline on the fire. Others are con artists, hoping to make a quick buck by crybullying while at the same hiding thier own indiscretions. But at the core, you've got a bunch of people with poor social skills spending too much time online, convincing each other of their own moral superiority.

Some of them don't consider themselves actually CIS, they most likely identitfy as non-binary or some other shit.
Also, keep in mind that some of the worst people in a movement are not actually what the movement is for, alot of the worst feminists were outed as sexual harrasers in hollywood earlier this year, some of which were male feminists, some of the worst people on the side of gay marriage are straight and some of the people that want all "white people" to die are actually white themselves.

It's going on here too, I think it hit the mainstream tipping point for feminists in the UK was in 2015 when feminist Germaine Greer was no platformed for saying she doesn't think trans women are real women which lead to a backlash from social media and third wave feminists, fellow second wave feminists in the Guardian whom I assume expected the feminist zeitgeist was with them stuck up for her but due to previously being accused of transphobic language soon backed down after huge numbers of complaints and ever since have followed the trans narrative.
Lately they've been another battle between trans people and feminists when a 19 year old MtF Labour member Lily Madigan allegedly got lesbian feminist Linda Bellos fired from her position as Women's Minister for the party after she made comments about not liking trans people using changing rooms (Leading to other members leaving in protest of her removal) and Lily then proceeded to get her old job and also signed up to a positive discrimination (women's only) fast track leadership programme (Jo Cox Women In Leadership programme).
