Why would they wear that anyways? Going to be annoying for the employees if they are in a hot environment already, and also at that point they're just cosplaying.

It's not too arcane a reference, it's just the specifically the style of haori and whatnot worn by the Soul Reaper/Shinigami captains in Bleach. I was thirteen once upon a time so I can recognize this lore from a mile a way.
