Because most people are stupid and that's true across most demographics so most atheists are stupid and either fail to see the idea of divine judgement as a valid metaphor for long term consequences of short term actions like gluttony and sloth or they're drawn to the ideology specifically because it's permissive of those behaviors.

Better question is why are Christians fat.
