This is out on Netflix as of today.

It's not actually that bad. Critics have panned it due to various reasons, such as Finn Jones not being that talented of an actor and Scott Buck being a mediocre showrunner, but there's also been a lot of virtue signalling as well (Asian appropriation! The Iron Fist shouldn't be whiiiiite!) so I got a little skeptical. After all, Luke Cage had incredibly good critic reviews yet also had an incredibly crippling pacing issue and was ten hours longer than it should have been. Lesson learned: never trust critics when social justice is involved.

I've watched one episode already, and I really don't think it's as bad as reviews are making it out to be. I think if you're on the fence and worrying you might be wasting your time, give it a shot. It gripped me way more than Luke Cage did.

Anyway, Iron Fist / Defenders discussion thread.

You have to consider the source material. You know that Hollywood has sucked the comic-book-well dry when they're reduced to making 'Iron Fist', which was a comic that was so bad that they had to combine it with another bad comic, "Power Man" (aka: Luke Cage) to keep both from going under.

i kinda like it actually. i dont know why people are bitching bout why he's white. dude's white in the comics.
You see.... :autism:

And anyway, even if they made him asian, we'd still hear bitching about how stereotypical it is for an asian to be a martial artist. It's not like Danny showed up and immediately became Iron Fist. He had the crap kicked out of him for years...but SJWs are all about instant gratification.

I watched the first 5 eps yesterday and while the beginning dragged, it started coming together by ep 4.

It's almost like these types that are critical of Iron Fist aren't even fans of Iron Fist to begin with.

Same shit is going on with Ghost in the Shell. While I'm not exactly the most optimistic about how the movie's going to turn out, bawwwing about "muh whitewashing" is pretty autistic.

Did it really? I only watched the first episode but it was so weird.

Like, Danny has no character beyond 'amnesiac super-monk who wants to claim his birthright.' Jessica Jones was also a severely mentally ill character with repressed memories but she felt like a person. Danny was bullied as a kid once and now he's an amnesiac super-monk who wants to reclaim his heritage and that's apparently it so far.

Big Al: Why? He showed up, served as a plot device for Danny to use Google, went on some weird anarcho-primitivist spiel, and then immediately died. What was his point as a character?

I'll see how Harold Meacham develops, but he seems like an 80s-level sneering corporate stereotype. Ward is okay though.

EDIT: Oh, and how the hell did Danny enter the country without any form of identification?

believe me when I say this: When I go see the film myself, I'll know, 100%, there's going to be that one or two person/people that'll be yelling out "whitewashing" or the movie being "racist".

And it'll make the movie experience even more memorable. Even if the movie does suck, that one moment will make my night.

I keep thinking of Willem Defoe from the first Spiderman movie whenever Harold Meacham's onscreen.

To be fair people have been saying it's the bottom of the barrel since Guardians if not even earlier. At this point I won't be surprised to see Speedball show up for how far they're willing to go.

Also where the fuck is Death's Head, MCU come on.

The second episode reveals he got in with a fake Canadian passport he bought in Morocco.

Yeah episodes 2 and 3 are actually distinctly better. Not yet as good as JJ or Luke but they've got me interested at least.

This may be a big pile of nothing, but I notice that the characters of Luke Cage and Iron Fist were recently in the Disney XD animated series Marvel's Ultimate Spider-Man. So I'm wondering if they are trying more MCU shows on Netflix with other characters who appeared like White Tiger and could these characters appear in future movies with the MCU Spider-Man.

A bit unrelated, but I wish they stuck with the original '70's blaxploitation Luke Cage.

He also beat up Doctor Doom over $200. '70's Cage was awesome.

No, it's their phase plan all over again.

In the past few years they reacquired the film rights for Daredevil and Luke Cage (they already had full rights for JJ and IF AFAIK). They planned out four series and one miniseries (The Defenders) back in 2013, and this was pretty well known: http://deadline.com/2013/11/disney-netflix-marvel-series-629696/

Out of all of this the only series they've made on an impulsive whim is The Punisher, and that's only because he was so well-received in Daredevil. All in all this is Marvel reapplying the success of the MCU formula, except the format of the TV series gives them more time to deal with drama.

The show was the most boring by far in my opinion. at least it isn't as bad as the Second half of Daredevil season 2, but still it kinda suck a lot. My favorite by a long shot is still Luke Cage
