It isn't, take pretty much any social critter (from apes to crows or whatever), and teh alpha(tm) sides with teh omega(tm) against teh beta(tm). Basic self interest really, the fuckers close to you in pecking order (and the ones above you) are competition/threat, whereas the loser(tm) ain't.
