The reason Mercury has such a privileged place amongst magicians and alchemists is because it's essential to survive chaotic transitions and reconcile seemingly incompatible qualities within the vessel.
You can run a bit dry of anything but as long as you keep a bit of it on your pocket (metaphorically, the metal is poisonous) you can rebuild yourself infinitely without going mad.
Probably a collective lack of mercurial energy is what is causing this phenomenon, manifested on the craving for external transformation instead of the inner transmutation Mercury calls for.
