Is there a correlation between anime-avatars and more "extreme" opinions?

It seems everyone is thinking, whenever they read a more extreme opinion (ethnonationalism, anarchocommunism, etc.) and then see that person has an anime-avatar:

"Well. Not a surprise here."

Now I wonder is there really a correlation between both?
And if there might be a correlation, why would there even be one? Is it because (imo) a lot of anime-fans use that as some kind of escapism, then see people with similar interests and opinions and then slowly start believing in that, because they see those other fans as friends?

As someone who is heavily into the scene since over 20 years (having over 1000 volumes of Manga at home as well as Light Novels and Bluraysets and having worked for an anime publisher) to me it totally seems that at least from what I can see that the anime-fandom has a lot of "those" people.

TL: DR "Should we gas weebs?"

Yes. Yes we should.

As for the "why?"

Not anymore then anything else I would think. The correlation you could draw is that people that like games, anime, wrestling, comic books etc etc (and I mean REALLY like, enough to post on a site like here) have a higher chance of being socially "ostracized" for one reason or another and then lean further to one direction - be that right or left - then other people. You could also make the case for the idealized version of Japan because they're fairly xenophobic, etc etc but thats way beyond my knowledge and probably not a case I would even try to make.

But I'm just pulling that out of my ass as pure speculation.
