I have a picture that someone used paint or something to block out parts of it with scribbles. Is there any way to remove it and see what's underneath? IMG_7902.jpeg

:waifu: - Which solvents would be better to take out an undesired layer of paint from a physical photograph, while not damaging the photograph?

:bogged: - Removing paint from a physical photograph is quite delicate, and using solvents can be risky. Here are some general options, but please proceed with caution:
  1. Distilled Water: If the paint is water-soluble (like tempera), lightly dampening a cotton swab or soft cloth and gently rubbing the area might help. Avoid soaking the photo.
  2. Isopropyl Alcohol: This can be effective for certain types of paint. Use it sparingly on a cotton swab, testing on a small, inconspicuous area first to see if it affects the photo.
  3. Acetone: While effective for removing some paints, it can also damage photographs, especially if they are printed on certain types of paper. Test it first and use very carefully.
  4. Commercial Photo Cleaners: There are specialized products designed for photo restoration. These are generally safer for the integrity of the photograph.
  5. Professional Help: Given the risk of damaging the photo, consulting a professional conservator is often the best option for valuable or irreplaceable images.
Always prioritize safety and test any solvent on a small area first to gauge its effect.

Sometimes the original image shows up in thumbnail. So presumably the data is stored somewhere. (From an image I downloaded, not scribbled myself)

I assume it's a shitpost but I will bite anyways: These parts of the picture have been changed to pixels which mainly represent a blue color. The information is simply gone. No tool will be able to recover it.

Not if it's a digital pic.
What you can do is reverse search it with the help of ChatGPT or something.
However, if the censored on is the only one showing up, that's it, that's all you get.
