is walmart just the american version of the warehouse?

I think I can translate this from Sheep Shagger to Freedom English.

The Warehouse is more like Family Dollar or Dollar Tree, or what Abbos would call a Two Dollar Shop. Walmart is more like Kmart for Abbos and Sheep Shaggers. Or maybe Bunnings with fewer snags and more clothing.

The Kmart comparison isn't really applicable anymore, Kmart Australia (and presumably NZ) has shifted its brand identity from a general 'buy everything but food' to a sort of Middle Class/Bogan Myers. It's actually turned out pretty successful for them, some of their furniture and household ornaments have apparently proven popular.

The closest thing to Walmart in Australia would be Big W. I assume in New Zealand, it's 'Warehouse'.

Neither of those two are trying to become your one-stop-shop for everything in your life including vaccinations, medicine, groceries, etc. however.

True. Current year Kmart is basically an Upper Middle Bogan housewife containment zone. I miss old-timey Kmart.

Actually, I did wonder about that. Last time I set foot in The Warehouse in Australia, it was basically a Reject Shop/GO-LO ripoff. That said, I haven't been anywhere near a two dollar shop for at least a decade (thanks AliExpress!).

It was never going to end well when we had Kmart, Target, and Big W setting up shop in the same shopping centres, targeting the exact same customers. Something had to give eventually, especially when two businesses owned by the same company were competing against each other.

For what it's worth, Kmart Group owns Target and Kmart, so technically every Target is a Kmart store.

Thanks.
To answer your question @Null''s Dad, no.
Walmart is BIGGER than The Warehouse if @Pee Cola's comparison is apt.
@Pixy I haven't seen a Kmart in years (the ones where I live went under a couple of years prior to Kmart's second bankruptcy). As of now, there are only 17 Kmarts left in the US. Targets are a different story.

@Pixy pulled me up on that. Sounds like The Warehouse in NZ is more like what Kmart used to be like in the USA (and Australia). TBH I don't think Australia or NZ have any stores that are anywhere nearly as large as Walmart.

Walmart is a uniquely North American thing in the Anglosphere, made possible by its population density. To my knowledge, the UK's Asda, which is owned by Walmart, isn't a 1:1 comparison to Walmart either; it's still primarily grocery-focused.

Also, there's a pharmacists' cabal in Australia; the Pharmacists Guild, who will fight to the death to stop any retailer or grocer from offering specialised medication or any other service that encroaches on their turf. They're a rather powerful lobbying group.
