Discuss Jazz here.

I was in the Jazz Ensemble for all four years of high school. I actually got "drafted" the first year; they needed a fourth trombone and I kept walking in during their practice because my locker was in the band room.

Here's one of the songs we played and I got to solo on (this is the original, not our Jazz Ensemble, though):

I played trombone in a jazz ensemble as well, but that was in 6th and 7th grade. In 6th grade we got to go to a jazz competition at King's Island (an amusement park near Cincinnati) and I guess we did pretty well.

I stopped taking band after 8th grade and I decided I didn't want to be in the jazz ensemble in 8th grade.

I play in a big band currently. All 40s Glenn Miller style that Bob would have gladly approved of. In fact, I'm 4th/bass trombone as well. GREAT bass trombone in the intro to the Stan Kenton song. He was really into bass trombone and even had 2 of them at one point. That must have been a really fun song for you to play. Did you play 1 or 2 valve bass trombone?

I notice the bass trombonist was George Roberts. I used the Marcinkiewicz George Roberts model mouthpiece all throughout high school.

At the time we played that song, I had actually moved up to 3rd trombone. But yeah, that was one of my favorites.

I was expecting Etta James, and come to see school band stuff!
I used to play clarinet, then bass clarinet, and finally bass guitar in my school bands, which are similar to what you call "jazz band".
This was all many moons ago, though.

I just wanna say that jazz clarinet is wildly under-appreciated these days.

Not in the band I play in. Our musical director is a clarinet player, and we do a lot of clarinet features. Begin the Beguine, etc. Personally, I cannot stand the instrument. Sounds like a simple synth square wave until the squeaking starts, then the eardrums begin to suffer.

My jazz ensemble director in 7th grade was a clarinet player. He made fun of us sometimes because he would play along and say we couldn't play louder than an old man playing the clarinet.

I played some jazz songs (simple ones) on my piano.

There are no simple jazz songs. Dominant 7th? That's territory most musicians don't speak the language of.

(Not done by me btw)

I've been meaning to listen to more jazz.

The other night Jimmy Fallon had the Preservation Hall Jazz Band on his show and they were REALLY good, I should check out their new album, hell I might even buy it instead of pirating it.

I've listened to Miles Davis and John Coltrane and I think their stuff is really good, I should listen to more of them. I've also watched a chunk of Ken Burns' "Jazz" and that's probably what got me into it.

I'd love to go to a jazz club someday, I didn't have a chance to go to to one last time I was in NYC as there's a ton of them there.

You can find live jazz clubs in any city. I'm originally from New Orleans, but even in Denver there are several. I'm partial to the early 20th century New Orleans style jazz and 40s swing, personally.

I didn't see one already, so I thought I'd make one.

Post or discuss your favorite jazz singers, players, songs, albums, etc. I guess

Kickin it off with Buddy!

I'm sure this is meant to be a fun, happy thread where people share great jazz and have fun, but I can't go into a jazz thread without bringing attention to Shooby Taylor.

This song is great, because it's the bestworst. This song contains the word "poopy" actually spoken, but entirely not in the context you would ever expect. Go into this expecting the worst, and be disappointed: this is Shooby Taylor, the Human Horn.

I like jazz, but I won't pretend to be a fan of it. I will say that Brubeck can do no wrong though.
