Jerry Seinfeld slams YouTube

A little old, but still 2015

Ironic coming from a guy who makes stupid videos about people getting coffee and is making millions from online revenue. That's definitely sophisticated.

Anyways, I do agree that 90% of YouTube is crap and only a select few are legitimately good. Part of me thinks he's jealous since people can get famous for making subpar vids while he had to actually be "funny" and "talented"

I never liked Seinfeld as a person and never watched the hit sitcom,so I have no reverence for him.

I like how Seinfeld is at least honest about how he is in real life though.

Also I wouldn't shit on Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee and Seinfeld deserves the praise that it usually gets. He's damn right about a lot of junk content getting on YouTube and getting lots of views.

I won't lie, he's got a point. Only things worth watching are the shows/music uploaded there (both legally and illegally) and videos to laugh/cringe at the stupidity of humanity.

Still, this feels a little dickish.

There is always a whole lot of crap in my suggested videos. It seems like if I watch 1 'gaming' video i'll have a 50 in my suggested videos, but if I watch 10 documentaries and marathon Skint i'll hardly get any similar recommendations.
I think youtube must push the shit that gets views, to get more views and ad rev.

Youtube is basically 21st century public access television. There's some gold here and there, but most of it is crap.

I've noticed an irritating trend in youtube videos, especially instructional videos, where the person making the video wastes several minutes of your time rambling about unrelated or barely related stuff before they ever start talking about the subject of the video. A lot of the time it's them talking about their channel, their subscribers, comments left on their previous videos, new filming equipment, etc. This is all stuff that should be in a video of its own. I just wanted to know how to change the battery indicator on my tablet from an icon to a percentage. That shouldn't be a 15 minute video.

Also, a pet peeve of mine is intro graphics that feature the words "_________ Productions". You do not have a production company. You have a youtube account and a camera.

90% of everything mankind has ever made is crap.
this is nothing new
this has been known for thousands of years
will be pointed out for thousands of years
there's no point in pointing out this point.
he knows it
we know it
we get it

What's different is that all that crap can now be broadcast by anyone to everyone.

Sturgeon's Law and its corollaries referred to SF, basically published SF. That has editorial controls and must actually fill a market need to make money. And 90% of it is crap despite that.

For YouTube and similar sites, it's more like 99.9% or more.

He's right. He's referring to the untold thousands of videos of idiots on YouTube who think that they have a show and a fanbase, when it's a lot of people like OPL giving impassioned speeches about MLP name changes.

The inter-net has allowed every Tom, Dick and Harry to voice their opinions; its just too bad that 99% of them are stupid, lame and boring.
Yeah, the internet has allowed 99% of stupid, lame, and boring stuff to be uploaded thanks to the likes of Youtube. For every AVGN, Markiplier, and Filthy Frank that uploads their videos, there are a ton of knock-offs that upload boring, trite videos that deserve a bad rating. Even with some entertaining videos Youtube has, some are stupid crap that can end up wearing out any sort entertainment they have.

Definitely this. I also think that Youtube's main value isn't really in entertainment. There are few entertainment based Youtube channels that are worth watching. I think this is probably due to low-production value, and by that I don't just mean that they might not have the best camera, sound, or video editing equipment. I think most of it is that when you're doing something on such a small scale and with such limited resources, you don't have access to the expertise that say, a professional editor, director, writer, DOP, etc... would bring to a production. I'm not saying that this is always necessary, but I do think that in most cases it is, and I'm pretty sure that's what Seinfeld was really driving at in the first place.

I think Youtube's main value is in demonstration of concept, capture and dissemination of events (tornadoes, police misconduct, animals doing hilarious things, etc...), or topical discussion/debate. I've watched far more instructional and discussion videos than entertainment based ones.

Considering instructional, that can be attested with the likes of YouTubers that made videos on how to build your own computer or even what sort of build they came up with. Not only that but there is also, as an example of events, footage that does show things such as police misconduct with the likes Eric Garner. Only other value YouTube could have is having some old videos uploaded that you wouldn't find anywhere else unless you went on some obscure website or something.
