I was reading Havana Nocturne, about the Mafia in Cuba, the other day, and it got my noggin joggin:
The FBI, for decades, denied there was a Mafia. Organized crime obviously existed, it's impossible to pretend that isn't a thing, but what was denied was that there was a single grand unifying conspiracy among Italian and Jewish gangsters to control (certain kinds of) nationwide crime. They said this despite knowing of its existence themselves (clearly, they used them to sabotage Fascist Italy and suppress the Ku Klux Klan).
For a regular person not involved in that business, there would be no reason to doubt that and no way to find otherwise. The Mafia (specifically, the Commission) was exposed to public consciousness after a major meeting of bosses in Upstate New York (Apalachin) was caught in 1957.
So, here there was an actual conspiracy by members of an ethnic group to corrupt institutions, even control countries (Cuba), and the authorities denied it for decades while it was at the height of its power, individual pieces of it recognizable but not the entire structure.
So how can it be far-fetched, then, for there to be an honest-to-god Jewish conspiracy?
