Would it be possible to host an ARG with a compelling storyline and puzzles on the farms? Or would it get drowned out by all the autism?

Is anyone interested in trying?

It'd be a shitshow unless you're incredibly competent, great with opsec, and don't annoy anyone here. Think about it like this - if it's a Kiwifarms ARG, you only have two choices of approach:
1. Keep it entirely on Kiwifarms. Without access to any funny admin tools (which you will never get), you'd be very limited in options and it would likely get stale.
2. Use exterior methods - other websites, IRL things people can visit, etc. If you do that, you're immediately producing a trail that people can use to identify you - which will inevitably happen. You really wanna risk your epic Cicada 3301 knockoff outing that you're into cartoon characters farting? Probably not.

Also, now that you've asked, even if you never did it, anyone who's read this headline will consider it possibly showing up at some point and even if they didn't use your name, it'd be associated with you and thus anyone who disliked you would probably take umbrage with it.

And the even shorter answer:
ARGs are fucking gay

Necroing the thread cause recently I've been inspired by a game called Shipwrecked 64 that uses some ARG elements. I found its premise to be silly and was left unamused by the fact that it relies on kiddie horror cliches and it underutilizes the underlying tech, and I figured that I could make something much better. Cause I think that there's a lot of things you can do with an ARG that's centered around an actual playable game.
For example:
  • Reward players with assets: puzzle solutions are hyperlinks, which contains archives with levels, that you can add to your game files to play them(and discover more puzzles).
  • Get players to change save files to solve puzzles.
  • Use steganography to hide spooky elements inside benign looking assets.
  • Read player data for puzzles, e.g. a door that opens only at a certain time/user's account has a certain username/user has certain files.
  • Read player data for horror, e.g. scan the picture folder for photos, replace enemies' face textures with them.
  • etc.
The main issues is, though, that this endeavor will take lots of effort, much more than you regular "ARG" with some spoopy faces and "secret" messages(encoded with something like base64 or Morse code) that don't lead anywhere.
