In the Civilization games, one of the possible victories involves launching a space ship to Alpha Centauri. This game, released in 1999, is about what happens after.
In 2060, Earth was circling the drain. Years of war, pollution, and famine had ravaged the land as humanity fought over the last remaining resources on the planet. Realizing that civilization was doomed, the UN undertook an effort to create a starship, a last, desperate attempt at preserving some part of the human race. The Unity was launched towards an exoplanet in the Alpha Centauri system that was believed to be habitible, with the crew placed in suspended animation.
However, nearly 40 years later disaster struck when a micrometeorite hit the ship. One of the landing pods was destroyed instantly, and the rest were grabbed by different factions and launched towards Planet.
The factions are:
The Peacekeepers: The remnants of the UN, led by Commissioner Pravin Lal. Starts with the Biogenetics technology. -1 to efficiency, but has extra talent for every 4 citizens, double votes for planetary leaders, can exceed Hab Complex limits by 2, and cannot use the Police State government model.
The Spartan Federation: A faction of well armed survivalists, led by Col. Corazon Santiago. Starts with Doctrine: Mobility, +2 Morale, +1 Police, -1 Industry, prototypes of units don't require extra minerals, and may not use Wealth as a value in Social Engineering.
Morgan Industries: A free market based faction, led by Nwabudika Morgan, a wealthy industrialist who helped fiance the construction of the Unity, in exchanged for securing a seat on it.
Starts with Industrial Base, +1 Economy, -1 Support, Treaties, pacts, and loans are more beneficial to you, starts with 100 energy credits, bases cannot grow past 4 without a Hab Complex, cannot use Planned Economics.
The Human Hive: a brutal dictatorship led by Sheng-ji Yang. Starts with doctrine loyalty, +1 Growth, +1 Industry, -2 Economy, can't use Democratic politics, free perimeter defenses at all bases due to them being underground bunkers.
The University of Planet: A society of technocrats who seek to advance scientific knowledge at any cost. Led by Prokhor Zakharov. Starts with Information Networks, +2 Research, -2 Probe, Free Network Node at each base, 1 free technology, 1 extra drone for each 4 citizens, and cannot take a Fundamentalist government.
Gaia's Stepdaughters: A bunch of SJW hippies that want to do gay stuff like "protect the environment". Led by Deirdre Skye. Starts with Centauri Ecology, +1 Planet, +2 Efficiency, -1 Morale (weak hippies), -1 Police, cannot use Free Markets, +1 Nutrients in fungus squares.
The Lords Believers: a religious faction led by Sister Miriam Godwinson. Starts with Social Psych, has a +25% bonus while attacking, +1 Probe, +2 Support, -2 Research, -1 Planet, Accumulates no research points until 2110, cannot take Knowledge as a societal value.
So, which faction should we take, and should we rename them? I'm partial to renaming Morgan "Donald Trump".
