I've been feeling a bit nostalgic lately and how things just aren't made like they used to. We're going to use cars for my lament.

Back when our parents and grandparents were kids they built cars to last. From the mid Forties to the Early Seventies cars were built to last, and you could fix them in your own home garage. There was less to go wrong with them, they were simpler, and they were hand assembled by craftsmen who had a passion for their work.

And just look at the cars then versus now. I can't think of any car made during my life that could rival the beauty of a 1958 Plymouth Fury, 1959 Cadillac El Dorado or Chevy Biscayne. And the modern muscle cars will never touch the sheer awesomeness of a 1969 Charger and GTO, or 1970 Dodge Super Bee. Everything was just so much better. Built by hand of American Steel by American craftsmen using their hands. They didn't have computers and robots doing the work for them using aluminum and plastic and other cheap materials.

Two examples:
1. I own a 1974 Ford F100 pickup truck. It was my Grampa's until he passed on, then my Dad's until he left to be with Grampa four years ago. My truck is 40 years old and totally unrestored. It runs and Looks better than most trucks I see on the road built within the past decade.

2. I also own a pre-war mechanical cash register that my grandparents used in their own store for years. It's a little beat up and dirty, but everything works perfectly on it. I plan to have it professionally so I can display it in my home.

It's just a shame that high quality, hand built products are for the most part gone and not being made anymore.

Anyone else feel the same?

Know what I miss? How cereal used to be. I'm talking about the GOOD stuff, the ones with all the sugar. Now it's all "fat free" and taking out what made it so good (to me, anyway). None of it tastes the same anymore. (:_(

Seriously, I get this weird aftertaste from some of them, like you do with diet sodas.

Is it a small thing and coming from a whiny 23 year old? Yeah, but I miss it.

Actually I think stuff is generally better nowadays but your mileage may vary on that.

Also,

I have never seen or even heard of a thing such as "fat-free" cereal. Hell, I'm pretty sure the cereal I buy and eat is still sugary and unhealthy as shit.

Anyone else feel like they were born in le wrong generation?

Honestly if it were me I'd say that everything has pretty much improved, we just liked it better when it sucked. Comfort zone you know.

I totally dig your wavelength. I'm the same way with soda. I can still remember when Coke and Pepsi and everyone was using cane sugar instead of processed hi fructose corn syrup. It tasted far better than what we have now. When I have the opportunity to buy Mexican Coke, Pepsi, Sprite and Mountain Dew I jump on it. I like how Pepsi has their Throw Back line for Pepsi and Mtn. Dew and I wish Coke would wise up and follow suit. I also quantity they'd bring back Crystal Pepsi. I'm not a big fan of Pepsi Products, I'm a Coca-cola man, but Crystal Pepsi is my second favorite drink.

I wish I was the age I am now, but in the late Sixties or early Seventies.

With video games, quality is all over the place.

Like the majority of games I've played are from more than 10 years ago, and I generally don't play many games that have come out recently.

BUT THEN AGAIN I did clock 100 someodd hours into Dark Souls, which came out only a little while ago. And I'll probably do the same with Dark Souls 2 when I get my hands on it.

I have. It sucked and none of it tasted right.

I don't like sweet cereal. Grape Nuts all the way.

Well then I suppose I'm a hater on the left. 'Cause I don't like Grape Nuts.

Oh right, topic. Anyways, it's a bit of a mixed bag for me at the end of the day. On the one hand, I'd rather have computers with huge disk space and HD TVs. On the other, I like the look of older cars better.

Also, who here hates most of today's music?

Chinese children make damned good phones, computers and TVs.

Australian Coke is still made with cane sugar.

I'm personally not one to dwell on nostalgia.

A lot of people say that more modern things lack qualities like "personality" or "charm" and often grow fondly attached to older technology out of a sense of nostalgia. Personally, I feel that nostalgia can act as a trap and keep people from adopting new things that can improve on what we've done as a society. We're constantly building on and improving things in our lives, making them easier to use, more efficient, more powerful, and smarter. I'm sure many people here who've been their own witnesses of change probably wouldn't want to go back to the technology they were using before because the older stuff had "charm".

Maybe I'm just spoiled by the modern age, but I'm happy to be living in current times and I'm eager to see what will come in the future instead of being fixated on the past.

It's just not the same now that Chris is too paranoid to want a heartsweet. I miss the days when a 20-something guido hunk groomed me to pretend I was a girl so I could make Chris stick his medallion up his butt and burn his house down. :sigh:

In Latin America, they still make soda in glass bottles with sugar, not HFCS. It looks like it's out of the 50s. As others said above, you can find it in some stores in the USA also.

I like 3DCG computer animation from the late 80s and early 90s, like the ones showcased in this VHS collection, "The Mind's Eye", and this documentary from the late 80s called "Computer Animation Magic" (which innocently suggests that through photomanipulation, an artist can "remove the World Trade Center from the New York City skyline"). 3DCG from then has a certain feel to it that I don't see in a lot of modern 3DCG animation, even though modern 3DCG is a lot better overall. Even modern consoles can do what used to take computers quite a while to render in real time, often with better results, I think.

Still, kind of like what Ziltoid says, although nostalgia is nice to enjoy, there's a such thing as too much of it.
