So, this is something that we kind of did in the world building thread (before everyone nuked each other), but hopefully this time we can get something interesting.
Basic idea: A typical fantasy world, only it's in the midst of an industrial revolution. So, the civilized lands have flintlock firearms, factories, trains, and technology roughly at a mid 1800s level. Dragons, giants, and monsters are legends, or zoo exhibits.
However, the world is still large, and the dark places of the world still hold barbarian kingdoms, lost civilizations, communist dwarves, and horrid abominations.

first things first, there needs to be a campaign based around the group being the founding members a fledgling merc guild. they've just recently, through whatever means, have acquired a group of islands. it is here that they'll make their base and expand it, while taking on contracts, hopefully from around the known world.

Basic nuts and bolts question: What classes, races would be allowed or outlawed?

I made something similar for my most recent campaign, though it's in a contemporary setting. I suggest also altering the weapons to fit the new setting since with the discovery of new technology, the use of magic and general utilities would likely reflect that as well. Is the technology ran on magic of some sort over things like coal or fossil fuels? Are cities more strict on magic use due to the technology?

One idea I did have was having a semi-historical D&D setting, most likely Byzantine and Ottoman wars. Keep in mind that it would be heavily augmented with magic, sorcery, and various classic races. Most of the events that happen/ed would be based on those in actual history, with organizations loosely based on their real life counterparts.

Just some food for thought, I have played 5th Edition before, would like to try out 3.5 someday if able.
