Does anyone else believe we are living in a matrix, some kind of simulation? I do cause I just cant fathom all this goofy shit that goes on in this world and people is for real. Just curious on other opinions because I think of this a lot

Yes. If we live in a simulation then there are rules to it that we can exploit
What’s the difference between exploiting the properties that define our universe and exploiting the properties of a simulation so realistic as to be nigh indistinguishable from the real thing? It would effectively be the same, wouldn’t it.

A machine has limits and must follow the rules set out. Reality can be whatever you want

I think there for I am.
If we are in a sim, it doesn't really matter to me because that just means I'm the main character.

If this is how our simulation looks like, I don't want to know what kind of freaky shit the real world is like. The deal we're getting is probably the watered down version.
On another hand, without us even knowing, we might be inside the plot of the second or third sequel by now. God knows what Neo is up to right now

With all the fantastic stuff they can do in the matrix do you think someone could bend the virtual reality to have virtually infinite shits? Or if they can't create matter willy nilly how about piss? How far could a matrix master's golden arch reach? Would Neo be able to hit a helicopter while standing on the street?

"If it weren't for our evil simulation overlords I'd have a qt trad wife and be a millionaire!!"

This reminded me of Nozick's experience machine, and even though the intention of the argument doesn't mainly relate to OP, it highlights how some people could (possibly) care about not being in a simulation, they'd reject it. So for some, there would be more value and a positive difference in what they consider "reality".

By the way, I don't entirely agree with the argument or how it's presented (from the little I've read), but that's another story.

This is like the brain in the vat thought experiment, but now I'd ask something more spicy: if you knew you were hooked to a machine, knowing that the potential for "near infinite" misery/pleasure is what lies ahead of you when you unplug, would you do it?

Who knows what will happen when you do it, will you break the statu quo of your life or not?

I think of Stephen King's Cell, a group of scientists tried some experiment that got out of hand leading to a pulse being spread via cell phones that turns people into literal zombies.

In the real world today we are dealing with "phone zombies" via smartphones and apps like Twitter.

So in a way yes, we are living in a Matrix, one created by smartphones and social media.

Or you can interpret it in a deeper, metaphysical way as something else weird happened around 2007, something spiritual? Science fictional? Who the fuck knows?

I also think of video game The Evil Within, where the end revealed everything you've been experiencing was a simulation of sorts and you wake up in a bathtub, I wouldn't be surprised to wake up one day and learn everything I've experienced since 2007 has been a dream/simulation/nightmare.

Again, who the fuck knows?

@ToroidalBoat I think this is a post you'd like.

Like I've said I-don't-know-how-many-times, it does feel like "real life is getting cancelled" in Current Year. Like it's getting replaced with "social media culture" and "smartphone culture", and soon maybe also "virtual reality" like that "Metaverse" thing.

I also miss when it was normal to not carry around an electronic device 24-7.

Online shopping is still ass in that you have to wait for delivery and pay shipping fee. Not to mention possible mail theft. I miss when there were a lot of bookstores around. Seemingly everything going online really adds to the feel that we live in the tech addicted cyberpunk dystopia* of Current Year.

*(For example, there was a lobby around here with a big aquarium of tropical fish. They took it out and replaced it with a lame screen that shows looping videos of various boring scenes.)
