Lord of the Seal is a Japanese indie Etrian Odyssey/Wizardry clone that's quite fun from what I've played of the demo. But according to the dev himself, you have to wipe all save data before you can get all of the features of the new 2019 update.

That old save games become incompatible after patches happens from time to time, especially with smaller devs.
It really fucked me in Clear Sky. Where I had to wait for a patch to solve a game breaking bug in the last mission which then couldn't load my old saves.

Honestly, LotS seems like a unique RPG Maker game and I'm thinking about picking it up. But it's still a damn shame this happened at all.

Unless it's an AAA game, chances are, updates from smaller indie studios will completely bork your save file. More often then not, they're updating spaghetti code, and usually break a lot of things. Bungie and Ubisoft are especially guilty of this, so it's not too uncommon. Still disgraceful and shameful, though. If you can't even ensure your customers save files surviving unless you absolutely have to change how the saving works, then you have no business doing so and should really hire some competent code monkeys. I hear Ukraine is in dire need of them.

...I really hope Atomic Heart comes out unscathed. (:_(

rpgmaker sperging:
iirc it's a common problem with rpgmaker games, there were efforts to make some sort of a "save import" plugin for devs but it's probably outdated by now

generally, if it involves changing in-game events and variables then old saves will likely crash the game

It happens and have been happening for a long time. Fallout 2 was a big release and their update borked the saves. At least it fixed it so that the car and trunk of the car traveled together and to the same destination.
