Someone sent me a link to this woman's thread on /baph/ and right now she's being extremely salty as fuck on her Twitter page. I don't check up on The Mary Sue that often but I know it's one of those really questionable publications that caters to SJW types, so I want to see how much this thread could possibly trigger her some more. People are currently finding out a lot of information about this dumb bitch and really, some of these tweets are just absolutely hilarious to me.

This might be worth mentioning in The Mary Sue thread itself but seriously, I think this shit is worthy talking about on its own and how someone can be this retarded. I think this thread could also trigger her some more if she were to ever come across it.

Some of Lyndsay's past fuck ups:

"Ask for evidence and you're subhuman."

More on those hypocritical, sexist remarks she made:

There's probably a lot more where this came from but it seems like she's already gotten negative attention before and went full retard with this latest stunt of hers.

she seems to be making more of a fuss over it than /Baph/ have.

I dont think there's any evidence of her starting the thread herself but it doesnt look like /baph/.

It could be anyone she's pissed of lately, an MRA, an internet savvy colleague, even another feminist (cos none of them peeps get bent out of shape over perceived insults and then go to war on the intertubes ever).

You know, I was about to say that this just looks like an ordinary woman who is rightfully (if overly) pissed off at people who verbally abuse her.

But hold up... asking for evidence of a phenomenon is a very sensible thing to do. You don't have to be an asshole about it. Asking for evidence of something is not the defense of something*.

Honestly, this is what happens when people fail to recognize that their knowledge or expertise is not shared by everyone. We should always try to understand that people don't always know as much as we do on certain subjects (and not be assholes).

At any rate, surely providing that evidence is not hard? It might be less obvious to people submerged in that culture, sure, but it's not impossible!

...

*Unless, of course, the evidence for it is so overwhelming, so repeated, and universally acknowledged. Then you get into new territory. Holocaust deniers and Creationists fall into the category of bad-faith questioners. However, I would argue that people learning about what it means to live in rape culture are not bad-faith questioners, but they are privileged.

So wait, was it definite that she posted herself to /baph/? I honestly have to ask because it has now happened twice before. Also both times from the radfem camp. Why those two did it I will never know. Anyway So was it actually her that posted it? Because it was a dick thing to do if someone else did.

On Humber's website, Kirkham is listed as a professor of liberal arts and sciences.

Do we have anymore information about her teaching? I.e., I'm not precisely sure what courses a liberal arts and sciences professor would even teach. Also, some of the mentions of her I found on the site cite her as an "English professor", though Humber's site is generally pretty thin on information regarding their faculty. She also doesn't even have a page on ratemyprofessor, so I imagine she either doesn't have a lot of teaching responsibilities or is pretty new.

I'm a grad student, so I did a really quick search to see if she has any publications, but I didn't find anything. If she has a professorship, I'd imagine she likely has at least one or two publications out there, which might be interesting to skim to see if they are as absurd as her twitter feed.

Lyndsay Kirkham is not a tenure-track professor and does not hold a PhD. She has a MA in English literature from McMaster University and has been employed as an adjunct instructor by Humber College. She teaches creative writing and English lit.

e: If you want to feel really uncomfortable, she will read you Irving Layton from the bathtub.

Note: if you are currently attending college, this is the shit you're paying for.

I think what brought her to the attention of the internet most recently was that she took offence at an article about people faking mental illness and bullied the author into trying to retract or amend it....

and then went even further with her condescending attitude when he tried to apologize...

She is apparently trying to go full lolcow on this one, but it appears to have started as most of these things do... Sociopathic SJW causes a dogpile of someone on twitter, and then cries "I'm being harrassed" when it rebounds on them. Or to put it more succinctly...

Perhaps its just difference in field, but this MA seems pretty sketch to me.
  • No required Masters thesis
  • Entire program lasts one year
  • No language requirement (which is absolutely mandatory if you want a PhD
Given the brevity of the program and the lack of a masters thesis stage, I guess it isn't too surprising that I wasn't able to find any publications by Kirkham. This is really pretty bizarre to me, since the whole point of a graduate degree is to contribute some original contribution to the research community (not to mention it just looks really good on the old resume).

I'm in the humanities as well (though in a substantially different field) and generally what people want out of their MA is to get a publication to build their resume and put themselves in a better position going forward into a PhD program by writing a masters thesis that (1) gives you experience doing a lot of reading and writing in your area, (2) start to build an area of expertise, and (3) hopefully provides a springboard to your eventual dissertation.

From what it sounds like, she just did an extra year of upper division coursework that she had to get B's in. That's a pretty piss poor MA, imho.

Eh...

Non-thesis masters are getting more common. They basically cater to people being sent back to school for "asset development" by their company as a part of a promotion to fill certain requirements. One of my M.S.'s is a non-thesis.

There are accelerated programs, but I've never seen one less than 2 years, unless you're finishing it with a bachelors, in which case it's take 5 years for a masters 4 for a bachelors, and not 1 year as an M.S. even if your previous B.S. is from the same university. Though I've never stepped outside STEM, so there is that.

Requirements are typically a policy of the department. My Ph.D didn't have a language requirement, and None of the departments I've been attached to have had one, though I haven't been attached to all departments of all universities everywhere, so I can only state that the absolutely mandatory part seems a little off the mark. EDIT: Sorry for the double post.
