In the world of fighting games you have Street Fighter, Mortal Kombat, Tekken, Dead or Alive and much more. Each of them having their own quirks, gimmicks and so on. However, the question of "Can your fighting game do X?" will be answered by most of them with a no. Not with M.U.G.E.N. It can do almost anything you could ever ask from a fighting game.

Have you ever wanted a 2D fighting crossover game between Mortal Kombat and King of Fighters? Have you ever wondered what a fight between Ronald McDonald and Goku in a gay steel mill playing "Gonna Make You Sweat" would look like? Have you ever wondered what Super Smash Bros. would look like without the groomers? This and much more is all possible in M.U.G.E.N.

Technically it's rather a fighting game engine developed by Elecbytes and released in 1999. What the acronym stands for remains an unsolved mystery to this day. The name itself is appropriately the Japanese word for infinity, as there is no limit to whatever your autism has in store for it.

Feel free to discuss anything M.U.G.E.N. related and, if you wish, the autism of its community.

Haven't touched or thought about mugen in years since I got pissed off people were stealing my assets. The community that sprung up around mugen has got to be the single most retarded community I've ever seen.

I remember I played around with it for a year or two, creating an ungodly, unbalanced abomination that had as many characters and stages as I could possibly fit. I remember I was using "Marvel vs Capcom 3" edition as a source, if that is still floating around then you have a good idea of how that would look.
MUGEN still beats most modern fighting games probably, so I haven't even paid attention to the most recent ones. Why bother when they will release a sequel in a few years and there is nobody to show off your sick skills off to? MUGEN is timeless, baby. Shame my old hard drive with the game went kaput, haven't tried playing around with it since.

I was curious if a thread of this actually existed, I’m glad to see someone finally make one.

To not go too TMI, this is a thing I’ve come back to every now and then because it’s fun to fuck around with. I’ve been in and out of the community over many years. I mostly enjoyed the overpowered as fuck characters who basically break the game in every way. There’s a lot of exploits in the engine that allow for specific work around to allow characters who are seemingly unkillable to be killed. Again; it as always fun to fuck around with things and see how broken things could get. All I remember about the community is that there was a LOT of drama that goes on. Things like leakers, private characters, spriteswapping, stealing code etc. are just the tip of the iceberg. Of course, when you have a game engine where you can make ANYTHING, there’s bound to be a lot of terminal autism and drama to ensue. I’d imagine with how vastly accessible the internet is nowadays, there’s bound to be a lot more than there was back in the day.

Thought I’d give just a tiny bit of insight with my experience with it, it’s definitely a fun thing to return to every now and then besides the community who is it’s own special brand of retardation.

Rapist Venom? Pretty disgusting! But how likely is it that a demonic alien life form wouldn't have and/or utilize a depraved sex drive? Deep thoughts.

I had my own build that I didn't touch for over 8 years. Then I found out about Ikemen and built a whole new build. Ikemen is definitely a little more stable and still compatible with every MUGEN character I threw at it.

Reminds me of the old SaltyBet segment from GiantBomb back in the day.

Mugen is incredibly fascinating. Now if only it was fun to play.

I'd just wish it was more organized. From what I've browsed over the years there's like 15 bajillion different MUGEN sites that have 15 bajillion versions of the same character but "modified" in one way or another. Kind of makes it hard to find the O.G. versions of characters from their respective O.G. games that handle and play like how they're supposed to (also fuck MUGEN archive's "register to download bigger than 1MB" limit)

Take StepMania for example.. you want the engine, you go to Stepmania dot com, boom. You want the official songs? Zenius-I-Vanisher has got you covered. Want original works, that site along with StepMania Online has got you covered, including ancient shit from the 2000's. Easy and simple, with no restrictions

There is no O.G., it's just whatever a bored autist spat out. Either find a sealed version where all of the characters were made by one person/team, or just pick and choose shit that you like. I remember one autist that decided that all of his Naruto characters actually had to do handseals for specials. You had to enter input mode, mash the correct buttons, then get special.
