Grey man was necessary when I lived in a place with a lot of street crime, although I didn't know it was called "grey man" at the time. For example I'd notice people carrying laptops in the bag that was provided with them, big logo of the laptop brand on it. I'd see scooter guys drive past and swipe those bags because they were such an advertisement of what was inside.

I just used a sports courier bag and let it get all dirtied up.
I lived somewhere with a ludicrous level of street crime and was astounded at how many idiots would be walking around talking on iPhones, diddling around with pads, carrying laptop bags with the brand on them, fancy watches, etc. What the fuck are people who do this thinking? Then they'd act amazed when they got mugged.
That's probably a smart idea not to draw attention to yourself. Nice bag, wonder what he's carrying in that?
Considering the kind of bag it is, a bunch of guns would probably be a good guess and might give them pause. Or just make them even more interested depending on what level of SHTF we're talking about.

That was another one, I purposely had a dumb phone at the time for the longest time. When I did actually get a smartphone, I was not taking it out my pocket in certain locations. I used to watch the gangs work the back of crowds with long nose pliers picking them out of peoples pockets, walking away and then by an accomplice and subtly passing off that phone to them.

Why don't I see even a single jar of peanut butter? Also need some metal containers you can put on a fire.
I've got water handled, at least for the short term, but I see what you mean about the food side of things. PB is a great suggestion and I guess I'll look for some ultralight cooking stuff too

Peanut butter is the best food for the field, can eat it on the go, don't need any prep. For a minimal cooking kit I recommend something like a billy pot or a wide mouth klean kanteen, a spoon and fork, and a cup. They got cups that fit right over the klean kanteen so it can be carried pretty compact. Need to have pliers or a multitool on hand for a klean kanteen as you won't be able to take it off the fire otherwise.

One thing I've learned is that you can never have too many tarps and too much cordage. Also to carry a few spare space blankets because they're usually of shit quality and tear up easily.

I usually carry the following in my pack:
- Fanny pack with an IFAK and a booboo kit, can take it out of the backpack and wear it separately for easy access.
- A lightweight rain poncho in a pattern or color appropriate to the environment. Something bright like blaze orange if you want to use it for signaling, or neutral or camo if you want to hide. Instead of poncho can do full rain gear (coat, pants, backpack cover) if expecting to be poured on.
- Lightweight tarp, like one of those silnylon ones, ideally in a neutral color or camo. Maybe two, can't go wrong with more tarps.
- A large heavy duty space blanket and a few cheap smaller ones.
- A large piece of folded up bug mesh. Depending on the weather and season maybe a full bug suit.
- Cordage: Assorted 550 cord, a spool of kevlar cord, a spool of braided 50lbs fishing line which can be used for sewing, fishing, trapping, whatever.
- Repair kit: Sewing needles, a knife sharpening kit, few nails, some metal wire for fixing things or making snares or whatever, duct tape and electrical tape, some superglue, a couple of glue sticks, a coil of solder (for fixing shit on the go, just heat up a nail with a lighter or a butane torch and use it instead of a soldering iron), bunch of other little shit.
- Water: Canteen, titanium cup that goes over the canteen, a couple of folding water bladders, a mini Sawyer filter, some Aquatabs just in case.
- Food: Canned meat, peanut butter, few cubes of chicken broth, salt, hot sauce. A small billy pot, cooking utensils. Black tea and instant coffee.
- Small fire making kit consisting of storm matches, few Bic lighters, a small candle, some of those dry fuel tablets, and a magnesium bar/ferro rod thing.
- Navigation stuff, paper map of area, a main compass and a small spare one, pens and pencils, documents
- Electronics, chargers, batteries, etc
- Firearms maintenance stuff
- Spare clothes in a dry bag. Don't skip the dry bag, trust me on this.

Probably forgot a bunch of stuff too. A flask of whiskey and a few packs of smokes can't hurt.

You'll need a good knife and some disposable lighters. Don't need to struggle with that ferrite lighter unless you absolutely need too.
Yeah, I'm thinking of making those super matches I saw in a short along with lighters in a bag. I used to have a bag of lighters in it but I would grab one when mine died and just never replaced them. As far as the knife goes, I'll throw my Kabar in

Ferro rods are overrated and most people never end up using them. I've got a ton of ferro rods everywhere and I can't recall the last time I used one, it's usually a lighter or matches. Sometimes flare gun.

If people want to dick around and do the whole 18th century larp at least get a proper flint and steel and make some charcloth.

Realistically, the best tool you'll need for surviving in a shit hits the fan situation is a gun and enough bullets to use it. Not just for shooting at deer or squirrels or whatever but for robbing people. Yeah I know it's wrong but morals should go out the window when it's do or die. Hunting and foraging is difficult. Robbing someone who's got food and supplies is easy, as long as you don't get shot first. Just be careful, you're not John Wick.

I'm also thinking of making a secondary kit for home, which can be grabbed in a heartbeat
Do not forget hygiene products, even if it is just a bar of soap. Optimally, you have some shampoo, a detergent to wash clothes and eating utensils, toothpaste. Get these at the dollar store Poundland, the sizes are smaller, but bigger than travel size, and these are forever products. You won't need to rotate. I'm also a big fan of Steramine tablets for disinfecting. They don't really expire and they will kill 99.999% of everything + it's food safe. Just throw a few in your kit.

Top call, especially on the sterilising tablets. Didn't think of that one.

Instead of detergent to wash clothes can use laundry soap too.
