The way the reader perceives the character was not the way he was imagined by the author.
That's normal; the moment you let someone read what you created, it gets a life of its own and you can't control it anymore. Sadly, a lot of authors refuse to understand this and sabotage their own works with useless trivia and unnecessary retcons.

So what is it about the character traits attributed to Malfoy that makes him endearing as a girl/woman but not as a boy/man?
If you're a guy, it's because he was a guy, so if you're not gay (if) he's not attractive, but I'm sure lots of girls liked him.
If I trust RebeKKKah's analysis of the character, it's a tsundere archetype, so it's attractive from that perspective, if you're attracted to that.
IIRC Draco was always portrayed as an asshole and on the evil side, then in the end turned out to be a good guy, just misunderstood. So that's the attraction that the women have to him, that they could have a guy that's actually a good guy but also has a serious side that can be an asshole. The "bad boy" trope. Something about female psychology.
I don't know enough about the Malfoid character to judge how similar it is or why it would be appealing to men. I just see a lot of anime waifu fantasy love romance drawings posted here, with some harem fantasy too.

Oh yeah of course. But HP holds up for what it is, a teenage story, well enough. There's no glaring issues without some nitpicking.

There are some stories, like Joseph Delaney's Beowulf which absolutely would be handled better by a willing fan who wanted to rewrite the series. Huge slack as he was literally dying as he was writing the story.

There are clear signs that the entire story was written by the seat of her pants though, to its detriment when you put any thought to it. Time turners, the deathly hallows, the limit of magic etc.

There are very few things I've read outside of proper literature where some improvements were not immediately obvious.

I can empathize with her not having every tiny detail ready before writing. It's especially hard given the tone of the story changes as the characters get older so now the world also has to get darker and more complex. Not to downplay her work, but crafting a series that would be consistent on that scale is approaching literary genius level.

The authors that try to have all those details ironed out before writing often get stuck in the worldbuilding morass forever, the ones that succeed and somehow manage to write a good story go down in history.

endearing as a girl/woman but not as a boy/man?

The original story is a very basic, simple wizard adventure. Few interesting parts, but nothing too complicated. The characters relationships are nothing too complex either. Malfoy is a standard school bully who has some Character development and more relevance as the story progresses. Otherwise he pops in the story occasionally, and dips out with no real point until much later.

Malfoid is endearing because Harry and Malfoids story intertwines in a much more interesting dynamic. For those who never read the books, I cannot stress how very little you would have to change the books to have a romance with Malfoid. She would work as the school bully, and as someone who is revealed to have a much bigger heart than people realize. A believable character with a range of traits, good and bad. And you want her to show up. You want their interactions to last longer. A skilled writer would leave the scenes just a bit too short, so the reader is left yearning for the next interaction.

You don't get any desire to read more about Malfoy being a bully because his only motive is to be evil. He's going to be evil this interaction, and the next, and the next. He is just any school bully. Every time he shows up, its to be a bully.

Malfoid is Harrys true love. Her motive is to hide her feeling for Harry, even if she doesn't realize it or accept it right away. She may be mean to Harry in front of others, and much more caring in private. Or she says she doesn't like Harry, but her actions show otherwise. She is simply more interesting as a character. Not because of her being a mean bully. but because she has actual ulterior motives for being one. And it is a much more satisfying romance versus Ginny Weasley, who basically felt forced in because "I guess Harry has to be with someone." Malfoid would be present in every book with direct interactions with Harry, and a subplot that spans the entire series.

Milkcat spoke some goddamn fire right there.
Even if malfoid had slightly more appearances or the same amount early on it would still work as long as it shifted in the later half of the story.

*edit*
Would it need a POV from Malfoid? Feel like it would be beneifical?

Spiritual boomers are retarded niggers & worse than useless, news at 11. Today's fanfiction authors, artists & simple enjoyers taking over tomorrow's entertainment industry is a significant part of why said industry is in the absolute state that it is right now, that's pretty much what happened when the people writing Drarry or Dramione fanfics back in the 2000s grew up and made their way into the writers' rooms left & right. We can blame the kikes and argue that they're just the latter's willing footsoldiers in their grand conspiracy to shit up Western culture with degenerate faggotry & demoralization slop, or whatever else you like. But at the end of the day, what's indisputable is that you can see the fingerprints of these types all over everything people have gotten increasingly sick & tired of in all sorts of media from TV to comics to books to video games:
  • The incessant racebending & shoehorned diversity,
  • Girlbosses showing up the moids at every turn,
  • The moid love interest to a foid heroine (in the stories which are still allowed to have them) being made out to be this hot bad boy who might kick or even torture her ass but is ackshually attracted to her (ala Kylo Ren for Rey in the Star Wars sequels or the Flip antagonist to Amandla Stenberg in The Acolyte),
  • The rampant faggotry to the point that no two people of the same sex can be allowed to just be friends without some subtle (but not as subtle as they think) nod being made to their latent homosexuality,
  • 'Safe horny', the notion that 'het' is lame & boring & problematic (unless it involves racemixing, some other form of degeneracy and/or the aforementioned kinky bad boy of course) in general, etc.
Pretty much all of these and more were long-running and noticeable tropes in ye olde fanfiction to varying extents, and they're nigh unavoidable if you or the people you know still consume any mainstream media in the Year of Our Lord 2026. The medium doesn't even matter - Harry Potter itself is getting Black Snape and Mutt Hermione (after a Black Hermione, which Rowling herself clumsily tried to canonize, in the play) on TV, in the realm of video games 343/Halo Studios is finally hitting rock bottom after crapping out a Halo remake whose litany of problems includes a girlboss who don't need no man and certainly no Spartan to help her, and so on. All these fanfic tricks breached containment a loooong time ago and I daresay anyone who was active in any sufficiently large fandom back in the 2000s will have an easy time recognizing them.

Now I don't expect any one of the randos writing Malfoid fanfiction today to turn out to be tomorrow's Tolkien, but they frankly don't have to be to make a lasting cultural splash. Whether they manage to burrow into the corpse of some entertainment studio's writers' room after one too many woke bombs has all but bankrupted the latter while carrying ideas 'inspired' from their Malfoid yearning days, or just make an AI-gen'd Malfoid movie that manages to be more popular than the latest mainstream dreck whose shittalking by the FNT griftosphere will get more views than the movie/TV show itself, they will have contributed more to 'reclaiming the entertainment space' than the drama-farming grifters with their thumbs up their asses in general and particularly this Pandasub person. Especially since he admitted he's already fucked off from his career in the entertainment industry rather than do anything about it, like God damn man, at least make the fags fight to fire you if you're going to shit on others for trying to do what you didn't.

So what is it about the character traits attributed to Malfoy that makes him endearing as a girl/woman but not as a boy/man?
To put it very simply: the borderline obsessive amount of attention given to Potter.

Same reason fanfic writers thought his traits are more endearing as a homo/fag.

It's funny how much better this fits than the original.
Personally, the funniest thing about it is the having the power of the dark lord knows not and then neither living while the other survives. If you have that stalemate and then the hand holding over the elder wand, that hits the prophecy in a way that actually is fucking fantastic.

Mutt Hermione (after a Black Hermione, which Rowling herself clumsily tried to canonize, in the play) on TV,
Didn't they just cast the girl who did Hermione's lines in the audiobooks?

Why did you put a reference to the Jomhas in here?
Probably because Malfoid and Harry have a much healthier relationship than Anisa and Ian.
