Markiplier is making a movie

I know I've said before I have mixed issues about Markiplier. I used to be a big fan but lately I'm not... at least, not of his lets plays.

But god damn, whenever he gets in front of the camera and just acts like a normal human being.... its hard to hate this guy, and easy to remember that he was and still is such a positive influence on the world at large.

Incidentally, despite the title of the video... he actually doesn't e-beg for money. So I gotta give him props for that. In fact at the end I'm not even sure what "help" he needs.

Gotta admit though I've never been through Markiplier's other things like Space With Markiplier or anything like that, so I have no idea what to expect of this movie. All people have ever told me is that Mark's movies are like the opposite of Linkara in that whereas Linkie will always write himself as the conquering hero, Mark will always write himself as the worst person in the room. But I have no idea if that's true.

To this day, I would like to've seen what Spoony would've produced had he actually gone through with his movie promise. It probably would've been pretty cringe, but there's a slight chance it might've lit a fire under his ass and returned him to some sort of early zany form.

I had no idea Markiplier had movie ambitions. I'd be very, very hesitant to embark on such a project given how bad the AVGN movie turned out. Have any of these YouTuber flicks been any good, gamer or otherwise?

Eh, it’s not like he’s claiming it’s going to be the most amazing movie ever or anything. It’s just something he wants to do. I enjoyed that In Space thing he did, so I believe he can, at the very least, make a watchable film.

His “In Space with Markiplier” did get a Emmy nomination, I believe.

Also probably will help that he’s not making “The Markiplier Movie”, he’s just making a movie.

Will it be his biography where he famously says “you want fries with that?” And calls Johnnyutah a faggot.

Its funny to me that Spoony got brought up in a Markiplier thread.

Fact is, back when I was into Markiplier was also when I was into Spoony. I actually saw the two as a sort of yin and yang, counterpoints of each other.

Both have one thing in common--both had, at one point, gotten contacted by suicidal fans, and both decided to contact that fan personally in order to talk them out of it. I've never heard of anyone else having an experience like that.

But beyond that... well, Markiplier is a guy who tries hard to look on the bright side. Like, he will almost never criticize a game unless it really is just irredeemably bad (I recall an early example of this was a game called Evil which he was being nice to... until he got to an irritating badly-programmed platforming bit, and suddenly all kindness was out the window). Most of the time, even when a game is crap he'll try to find something constructive to say about it. And of course his attitude when dealing with people is, well, this.

Spoony, of course, is the opposite. He's the guy who said you'll one day see everything you love "turn to shit in betrayal." Spoony's the guy who goes in expecting everything to be bad, and if there are problems, he will find them, and of course he tends to be harsher on people.

To be honest I've always felt like there was sort of an "imbalance in the force" ever since Spoony retired. These days I don't want him to come back so much as I want there to be a spiritual successor who fills the void (for awhile Projared was that... guy even kinda looks like Spoony.... but he definitely fills a different niche).

My own personal attitude is.... like, I want to agree with Mark's optimism but I can't deny there's a lot of validity to Spoony's views--I remember particularly resonating with his implicit criticism of mainstream reviewers (how stuff like Final Fantasy X would feature bits during the credits where he mentions what Gamespot and Famitsu rated the game, for example)... in fact when Dungeons & Dragons 5th Edition came out, I didn't care about any reviews but Spoony's, because I knew everyone else was gonna suck the game's dick and he would be the only one that finds the problems... and of course I was right.

(the reason I felt that way was... well, I was mostly an outsider-looking-in when it comes to Pen n Paper games, but I still had picked up enough to know that 4th Edition was not well received.... and one pattern I've seen in nerd spaces many times over the years is that when you have a not-well-received entry, anything that comes after it is gonna be put on a pedestal regardless of its actual merits. Like just for example, a lot of people liked The Force Awakens simply because it wasn't the Prequel Trilogy, and a lot of people put Mega Man 11 on a pedestal simply because it wasn't Mighty No. 9. So when I heard people were praising fifth edition, I assumed it was this phenomenon in play. Spoony seems particularly immune to this kind of thing, so I expected him to be based).

Both youtubers together, they put you in the mindspace of.... be optimistic, but not to the point of being a shallow consoomer retard who is utterly blind to reality. And even when things disappoint you, remember you still have a lot to live for.

That said it probably says something that they turned out differently, with Markiplier being bigger than ever and most of my current dislike of his output is squarely a "me" thing, where Spoony objectively jumped the shark. What doesn't help Spoony's case is that Markiplier actually had a shittier life--his dad died of cancer and he almost got thrown out of his house by his mom (who he apparently used to fight with a lot) before his youtube career brought him back from the brink.... meanwhile Spoony to my knowledge has never suffered anything similar and yet, well, you know.

(That said, my headcanon likes to only acknowledge Spoony as he was in 2016 or so. For me he might as well have stopped existing around the time he started doing livestreams exclusively).

Mark posted a bit of an update today:

I'm mixed. On one hand this almost is sounding like the behind the scenes of the AVGN movie, but on the other hand Markiplier is clearly a lot more level-headed than James Rolfe was. I actually feel like this is inspiring confidence.

Any huge project of a YouTuber is extremely likely a channel killer.
He's banking on his established audience which he has a parasocial connection with built over multiple years I would think. He did do that space series show thing that was well received I think? It's definitely going to be a big risk for him to attempt to make a movie though. There is a big leap from going to let's play and podcasts to making a film.

It's not a question of success, but the amount of time and effort he'll invest in it compared to the channel, and the inevitable souring when the project (if it ever finishes) doesn't live up to his expectations.

That said, Markiplier already is no stranger to slowing down his output in favor of big projects. He's done three "Choose Your Own Adventure" style Youtube series (A Date With Markiplier, A Heist With Markiplier, and In Space With Markiplier) and actually twice did live on-stage comedy tours (I believe once was in the UK). If anything doing a movie seems like it should be easier.

Let's Players for some reason don't seem to have the same issues as, say, reviewers like Spoony or the AVGN do. I mean Pewdiepie still remained big even while doing Scare Pewdiepie, a legit 13-episode series (and there was actually backlash when Season 2 of that was cancelled).

I do wonder what kind of movie it'll be. With Markiplier you'd expect a horror movie but his past projects haven't leaned into that. Heck his first short film, "The Fall of Slenderman" was a comedy.

Turns out the movie is going to be an adaptation of an indie horror game called “Iron Lung”.

Iron Lung itself is a little indie horror game by the guy who developed Dusk (a good Boomer Shooter). Basically you're in a sub that had to go to several locations and take photos for research the sub gets damaged and you the player dies with the implication that it was some spooky ocean monster.

I could see it making a good short horror film. All you need to do is make a submarine set and a huge youtuber like Markiplier can certainly get the budget.

Yeah, after I saw it was based on a game, I went and watched Mark play it(because I figured he did) and I can definitely see it making for a good horror film if done right.

why are we giving movie budgets and shit to people who have no talent or skill in the arts? it seems like thats all everything is these days.
To defend mark slightly, at the very least he is able to hire people who know what they are doing, "A Heist with Markiplier" was enjoyable as a short little Choose your Own Adventure thing, not exceptionally funny to me but enjoyable, now will him shifting to some sort of horror short film work? We will have to see, but at the very least he can hire people who can do a good job.
