Are you sure it's key-holing and not just tearing paper targets? HPs always seem to act like wadcutters and punch neat holes but FMJ doesn't especially with subsonic rounds. It gets worse when I haven't changed the cardboard behind my target and it's all blown out because the paper moves.
This.

Make sure and if it is keyholing send her back

I sent my M&P 2.0 back because the slide wasn't locking back on empty 100% of the time, think 70% and S&W replaced the slide stop and it worked just fine after that.

If the barrel was fucked (I’ve seen pics online of Smiths shipping from the factory with almost nonexistent rifling) I can’t imagine a situation where it wouldn’t be doing the same with JHP. Cardboard targets or a backer will solve the mystery.

I’ve only had a slide not lock back on one gun (1st gen VP9) with one magazine. Returned it to HK and never had the issue again.

the Ruger massacre:
Shame they're killing off so much of their old lineup, but it makes sense. If they were run by a halfway competent group they would have had an integrally supressed Mk IV they were sitting on ready to show off the day after the recent deregulation.

On the topic of .22s, I have a nephew whose dad got him a single shot one that he really liked, asked his dad if they could get a semi one the same day we took him to the range. Is the 10/22 still worth a damn? Are there any others I should keep in mind for a recommendation?
