The original AR-10 charging handle was similar to the FAMAS, trigger shaped and protected by the raised sight. Pretty high speed for the 1950s.

That design does explain why the "carry handle" was designed like that since flip up sights or a fixed back sight makes more sense weight wise than that "carry handle" piece.

Took my dad out shooting on his property. He has a Beretta 92SB he bought in Germany in the 80s. Like most 92s it's a god damn tack driver.
It was funny to see him use the cheaters lens on his glasses to get a sight picture but God damn he bored the center out of a plate at 15 yards no problem.
Only hitch was towards the end when he handed it to me. I got ten rounds in and "click". I try to cycle the slide and it won't budge. Flipped the takedown lever to get the slide off, and see the last round case is stuck against the barrel. Couldn't get the barrel out of the slide. Ultimately had to call our shooting day after that.
Ended up having to press my finger on the back of the extractor and finally the barrel came out. The case was still stuck in the barrel and I had to use a cleaning rod to drive it out.
In my mind the possible causes are;
1. Old extractor spring or old extractor needs replaced.
2. The casing was out of spec.
3. The gun needed some cleaning and lube (hadn't been shot in 30 years but ran 3 mags fine before the mishap).
Anyone else have any ideas?

As springs get worn they lose strength, so if that were the problem the extractor would skip over the groove in the case by pulling the slide back. A worn extractor would also skip over the case extraction groove because the "claw" gets rounded over time. Fouling wouldn't make a case seize inside the chamber, usually.
I'd inspect the case and the chamber. Since you mentioned it needed lube, there's a possibility that it could have been stored without some kind of oil protecting the barrel and rust spots in the chamber can create a rough surface that the case grabs into.

it's difficult to determine a cause without being able to reproduce the issue. if it was a one-off it might have been that particular cartridge developing a bulge at the case web just enough to get it to stick - which can happen with the 92 and other similar semi-supported chamber designs. this assumes the pistol is in good mechanical condition without significant defects that would generally show repeat issues over time.

That sounds like an under-oiling situation. It works really well for a few mags, and then it starts to seize, but is more pliable once it has rested and cooled down. If that gun hadn't been lubed in 30 years, it's my first guess. Especially because it happened after a few dozen rounds. The spring is definitely due to be replaced (and the issue will be easy to replicate), but see if lubing it up is enough on its own. Hope it serves your dad for another 30 years.

IIRC some of the very earliest AR-15 prototypes had the same upside-down trigger style charging handle as the early AR-10s, but they changed them on both rifles to having them in the now familiar position at the rear of the upper receiver because the "trigger" would get extremely hot as the rifle was fired from being right above where the gas tube intersects with the gas key on the BCG.

Thank you for all the input. Did a thorough cleaning and lube job. Took it out and ran another fifty through it no problem. Still going to help him swap out his extractor spring (I did it years ago on my 92A1 so it shouldn't be hard).
I actually dig the SB more than the FS because the safety isn't a decocker.

I'd like to wish my gun friends a happy late thanksgivng. Black friday, was more a ...wood grain for ole basso, I got my self a M1 Garand, in great shape gunsmith checked out, 200 rounds surplus a sling and 10 clips for 1k. I wasn't expecting to but I just couldn't say no.
Personally and with out bragging I'm pretty good about high recoil even more so with long guns, but I find this to be quite rough (not just mine but any I've shot) am I a weirdo?
It's a winchester made, I ordered an adjustable gas plug and reloading stuff for "ought six". Over all really happy.
Aside my sperging, hows everyone feel the S&W MP is gonna come in centimeter home intruder deleter (10mm).
And I kinda feel guilty as I have piles of parts guns that need finishing.

Do any of you guys know what specific kind of AR-15 rifle Kyle Rittenhouse used to kill commies in Kenosha? I've tried using search engines but all it's bringing up for me are worthless opinion pieces from cumguzzling journalists about whether it was legal for him to own it or not. Even the Wikipedia article can't just tell me and refers to it multiple times simply as an AR-15 sTyLe asSaUlt rIfLe without even giving me so much as a manufacturer name.

I think they're jumping on the 10mm resurgence trend too late, can't find ammo for it. Grats on the M1 find, sounds like you had a great deal.

Any idea if S&W plan to sell those new AR pistol grips and their new flat triggers separate, or do you have to buy the whole gun?

Replacing the straps on the Miad grip is such a pain in the balls. And also adding qd cups to the stock as well.

the grips are modeled on their M&P pistols and made in-house by S&W directly on their own tooling, so i'm not sure they'll officially be sold separate, but i would expect them to pop up on the after-market at some point. the flat faced triggers are made OEM by CMT explicitly for S&W, but like with early S&W AR-15's it'll likely be brought in-house once there's tooling and space for everything. They might become just a spare part at some point, much like the grip.

The XAR-15 and AR-15s #1 to #6 had this style of charging handle too, it was dropped however because they found out with the AR-10 that after a couple hundred rounds of sustained fire the charging handle would heat up too much and burn the user if they tried operating it rendering the rifle useless if there was a malfunction, this is why after AR-10 serial number 004500 with the Portuguese contract a piece of Bakelite was added to the charging handle, meanwhile the Dutch experimented with two different styles of charging handle, a side charging connected to the top charging handle, and eventually the modern AR-15 style charging handle, then magically 3 months after Armalite visited the Dutch factory and was presented that charging handle design, AR-15 #7 had it.

If you want one specific recommendation, the Knight's Armament SR-15 is worth whatever price is being asked, just keep in mind that there are some proprietary parts. LWRC is another great company that consistently produces gold-standard gear. LMT is extremely well-regarded, but I don't have too much personal experience with them. The FN-15 is absolutely solid. Please don't buy an M&P Sport 2 if you have the money for an FN-15 lol. Also, yes, it was legal for him to possess that weapon under state law. Trying to charge him for it was one of the prosecution's funnier mistakes.

This is only true if you're military or law enforcement. As I've said before in this thread, KAC will not guarantee accuracy for civilian rifles so if you get one and it sucks, you're fucked.
