You can get replacement buffers very cheaply and easily these days, so it's not a big deal, just make sure to check. You couldn't get those for a very long time, thus why you often find them with a broken or missing stock, or an ugly nylon Choatee one which doesn't care about


Important observation. The classic shotgun shell really wasn't designed around a box magazine, fuck, it wasn't designed around magazines at all, it's just that the tube magazine is the one that works when you're looking at a paper hull, or these days, a plastic hull. Even that wasn't pain free, because specs varied far more back in the 1800s than they still do today.
There was actually a lot of sense in the Protecta shotgun being a big revolver.

Ok both of those are really good to know, especially the camp carbine buffer. Glad to know the aftermarket is coming out in full force to help. Also good to know about shotgun mags. Again wouldn't keep it loaded, really just keep a box by the bed with the revolver for SHTF, along with my SKS (I got options). If I go for a shotgun, really I want to have fun with it, and swapping these goofy fug hueg mags would be fun. Again the Maverick sounds promising too, and I may end up with both in the coming years.

I'm still thinking about a pistol too, maybe a RIA 1911 since I have 2 Wilson Combat 8 round mags and hollowpoints for one, or a 40 cal of some sort, since I want to share ammo with my fren (logistics strikes again!). A pistol would be a nice choice since I could keep it in the car/house while I have the revolver in my pocket.

I gotta say, AKfiles is the best forum I've come across right after the farms.

Edit: what paint do you guys suggest to touch up my AK handguard retainer? Rustoleum flat black OK or should I use some kind of miniature model paint?

As far as a .40 goes a decent cheap option is always a used or police trade in Glock 22/23 or a S&W M&P 40 in full or mid size.
Full industry support availability on parts/holsters/accessories for both.

If I can find the S&W (,Glocks have troubles in 40 in my research) that's a deal I'm willing to make. Otherwise I'm looking at the SD40VE for a 40 cal.

I hate to break it to you but that's basically a Glock.
And Glocks do not have trouble in .40, I don't know what half-assed research you're doing - a good chunk of the country has police departments using them with no issues whatsoever.

Well alright about the glock issue. The SD40VE is cheaper however, and I do like the stainless finish.

Probably comes from the Glocknade meme. Smith & Wesson devises a shorter case for the 10mm FBI Load, and Gaston Glock is a sneaky fucker who actually beats them to market (which isn't even the first time, either). The Glock 22 doesn't have excellent chamber support, but it doesn't matter because you're shooting factory ammo and if you want a high powered 10mm you would get the Glock 20. No, wait, troglodytes are trying to handload up .40 S&W anyway, so Glock has to adjust the profile of the chamber to prevent retards from making IEDs.
This shit was memed on relentlessly by /k/ back in the 2000s, because the odd retard still did this with remaining pistols with the old barrels, and a lot of people who didn't know better just came away with the idea that Glocks simply exploded sometimes.

The .40 issue with Glock is loooong over so forgot about that.
The sw40ve is... Ok but for a few bucks more you get a gun with real industry support instead of niche group.
Here's what I recommend.
Go used or le trade.
A 23 or m&p40c.
Get 9mm conversion barrel + 9mm magazines.
Go threaded for muzzle device or future suppressor.
Down the road get a .357 Sig conversion barrel, again threaded.
The .357 mag is identical to the .40 mag so you're gtg.
One set of accessories (triggers, holsters, ammo pouches, sights).
Done.
One gun, one set of accessories, 3 calibers.
How does that sound?

So I have the SD9VE, had it for many years... Yes, this is the pistol that got S&W sued by Glock... However I will tell you this, these things are insanely underrated. Mine is a fucking tackdriver. What you get for $200 or whatever these go for now is well worth getting it over a Glock if you're on a budger or don't care about aftermarket. Apex Tactical makes a trigger and spring kit (which I own) that completely changes the feel of the gun. There is an extremely small aftermarket for these and iirc they take regular M&P sights as well. The only thing that really needs it though is the trigger and take down pin. Dara Holsters makes a decent AIWB holster for these as well.


These things really are a diamond in the rough, you shouldn't let someone talk you out of it if you can get one for really cheap.

It's not even about affording the ammo, you would definitely have to manufacture it yourself and fuck that honestly.

the S&W Sigma, SW40F and SW9F that was the target of the patent lawsuit in the mid 90's. the SD series from the late 90's is an improved version that had enough differences to be brought to market without the patent infringement (and having to pay Glock a fee for each pistol sold). the "VE" is the cost-reduced variation that came out after the M&P polymer pistols to offer a lower cost alternative that S&W already had the tooling and parts for. cost-reduced in the way that the original boxes had 3 magazines, a loader, and S&W's version of a pistol cleaning kit and the VE just had 2 mags only. in some ways, it is a more primitive M&P pistol, if you want to think of it that way, and mostly suffered from a terrible trigger that was both flimsy, squishy, and yet amazingly heavy.

the SW99 series is also decent for typically under $300 if you want something more Walther-like. unlike the Sigma, S&W actually got the license from Walther this time around lol
 
I'm happy with my Beretta 96G... but it's from the before-times, before striker fired, polymer framed, etc.

I also have the PX4 Storm in 40, but it's (one of) my subcompact carry guns. I didn't get 9mm because I didn't want to add yet another caliber. Then I inherited a 9mm anyway, so much for that plan.
 
What the hell happened to all the M9s? All the listings I see on gunbroker are fucking .22lr pistols.
