The Good thing about the Ultimax is that it is, using a term I personally made up, the first Super Assault Rifle, meaning that it is the first LMG that handles like a big assault rifle, quick reloads, high capacity, smooth operating.

The Problem with the Ultimax is that it's fucking mag fed (using semi proprietary mags) and that is probably the reason why it never got a really big military contract. It took until the Ultimax MK.9 for STK to make a belt fed model and that as far as I know was only ever shown off at a trade show.

If it weren't for the existence of the Calico guns and their featuring in gun magazines at the time, I would has assumed that this as the inspiration for S. M Sterling's Description of the "100 round spiral cassette" the Domination's T-7 rifle uses

I've often wondered why American manufacturers haven't tried more materials for shotgun hulls, like steel or even reintroducing brass hulls. Possibly even attempt to make more high performance shotgun loads. I know the shells designed for the CAWS program were pretty hot for a shotgun load.

Speaking of PSD, I do need to get mine registered as an SBR so I can get the stock for it.

This. Box fed shotguns would gain a lot of credibility in home defense if they had more rigid shells. I love my Saiga 12 but part of the reason I don't use it for home defense is due to the fact you can't leave the mags loaded long term. The constant pressure will deform the plastic hulls and they become less reliable

Let me tell you why: When you're out bird hunting whether it's ducks or doves you might take 25-50 shells or more. I usually take 25 shells on my cartridge belt when I'm squirrel, rabbit or crow hunting at least. I have 50 brass Magtech reloadable 12 gauge shells and when they are fully loaded they weigh a FUCK TON. If I was going to a big bag driven pheasant shoot there is no way in hell I'd take brass. My back would be broken before i got on peg.

I'm-a get the 10" barrel for my Origin 12 and a Salvo 12. Also really want one of those H&R Colt 607 repros, or at least the 607 lower with an XM177E2 upper with a real sound modulator. Never really cared for the CAR-15 stock and always liked the Colt 607 stock better, and I guarantee you there was at least one SOG or SEAL in 'Nam who mated a 607 lower with an XM177 upper because he liked the earlier stock better. I would have.

Edit: definitely going to get the short barreled Cloak Industries upper when I do my belt-fed AR build as well.
