Melbourne lobby group pushes for ‘gender-equal’ traffic light icons

A controversial push to include symbols representing female pedestrians on traffic signals in Melbourne has divided public opinion.

Today, on the eve of International Women’s Day, the Committee for Melbourne lobby group will install 10 of the special lights at the intersection of Flinders and Swanston Streets to reduce “unconscious bias” against women.

Committee CEO Martine Letts said “unconscious bias reinforces stereotypes and influences daily decisions and attitudes”.

She said the initiative is aimed at sparking conversation and positively addressing the issues.

The committee’s long-term aspiration is to change the Victoria’s Road Safety Act to have equal representation of men and women on traffic signals.

Minister for Women Fiona Richardson said she was “thrilled” by the campaign.

“There are many small – but symbolically significant – ways that women are excluded from public space… This is a wonderful way to make public space more inclusive for women,” she said.

The campaign is also backed by the Governor of Victoria Linda Dessau, and the Women’s Leadership Institute Australia chair, Carol Shwartz.

Melbourne pedestrians his morning seemed divided by the idea. Some said it was a “nice touch”, while others argued it was “unnecessary and costly”.

The idea was embraced at Bridge Road in Richmond last year, with the usual red and green man replaced with an icon representing the first woman elected to local government in Victoria, Mary Rogers.

Councillor Mary Rogers was elected to the City of Richmond council in 1920.

A similar project was also undertaken last year in Valencia in Spain, which implemented female traffic light signals on around 20 main streets to tie in with International Women’s Day.

ARE YOU ASSUMING THEIR GENDER?! What if those women are HAIRY TRANS TRAFFICLIGHT WOMEN?

This sort of meaningless virtue-signaling is what feminists want to spend citizens' tax dollars on, when people around the world are starving. This is why they've left normal women behind.

Arent they already gender equal? It doesnt have breasts, and it doesnt have a penis, so you cant literally assume its gender, shitlord!

I mean what's the fucking point anyway? "Oh women should walk at this time but men have to wait half a second longer".

It's not about including women: it's about excluding men.

I just jaywalk everywhere anyway. It seems to vary by region but when I see people waiting for the white man of safety when there is obviously no traffic anywhere I think they are suckers.

This is a pretty stupid idea. Road signs and signals should have utilitarian and consistent designs for the sake of safety and to convey their message in the cleanest and most efficient way possible. There really should not be variants of the "cross on green person" -- even though it's still green this has the potential to leech into other signs.

I'm being hyperbolic here, but imagine driving past a sign that read "SLOW: PEOPLE OF VARYING GENDER IDENTITIES AND ETHNICITIES AT WORK".

Find some other bullshit way to "reduce unconscious bias".

Replace all humans in roadsigns with cats. It is the only way.

Even though it's discriminatory against dogs.

The older (DONT) WALK style signs didn't have anyone on them at all. Why not just go back to those?
Oh wait, it's because having a simple identical design worldwide is better than everyone making their own.
By the way, they even tried to make it look like a specific person, and a person from a long time ago at that, which will just further confuse things because it's not even a simple symbol designed to indicate "any person" now, it's some sort of stupid symbolic thing.
Some things are utilitarian and should stay that way.

I'm glad women don't suffer from FGM, being married off as property and sold into sex slavery, burned with acid for trying to read gang raped for driving and forced abortions of female fetuses.

I feel like equality is nearly here once we get some "gurl powa" traffic lights.

In a literal and figurative way, ... fucking cunts.

Agreed- there's also the fact that, if the crude figure is drawn wearing a dress or whatever you can't see its fucking legs, which are pretty important to communicate the idea of walking in a completely language-free way.

Feminists have become so progressive they've somehow gone backwards and become less believable than dated Disney characters
