They just released Monster Rancher 1 and 2 in a compilation on steam and the switch. In my opinion, the best monster breeding game. Currently training a Naga called Rata. The cartoon was super neat. I hope this sparks renewed interest in the franchise and we get a new game.
I always remeber mu Draco Mochi dying being my first experience with dead, lol.

I remember they tried to start some Monster Rancher MMOs a while back to revive the franchise but that did little to renew interest afaik sadly, especially since they didn't use the disk scan gimmick, although I liked some of the monster redesigns. Hopefully this does a better job of renewing interest and they kick it off with a proper sequel or reboot of the series.

I kinda want to try this series, but a big part of I recall reading is how you create randomly generated monsters by putting in CD’s. How would that work on a Steam?

They'll probably do like some here have said and just use amiibos. If players are lucky, maybe it'll only be just one monster disc amiibo and have it so that you can update or randomize your disc's monster with each with a limit based on time... or money.

I've always been curious about this series! Now seems like a good time to hop in. Is it worth doing 1 first, or should I just jump straight to 2?
It's worth it, I suggest you go through 1 first to learn the ropes and learn the different monster types.

I vaguely remember monster rancher. It was that Japanese cartoon that started airing here around the same time as Pokemon and Digimon and shit. I remember nothing about it other than there being some eyeball monster thing and that it was yet another Pokemon type show.
