More than 40% of Japan's population is loveshy, survey suggests - Japan is also the home of Anime. Coincidence?

More than forty per cent of young singletons in Japan are virgins, according to a new study that highlights concerns about the country's demographic challenges. Japan already suffers from the world's oldest population and a shrinking birthrate, with the government struggling to incentivise marriage and parenthood.
Now a survey of unmarried people aged 18 to 34 found that around 42 per cent of men and 44.2 per cent of single women had never had sex.
The study is carried out by Japan's National Institute of Population and Social Security every five years.

The country's government has worked hard to booth the birthrate in recent years, providing incentives such as support for child care and tax breaks.
The new data however indicates, that, if anything Japanese men and women are growing apart.
The last time the study was conducted in 2010, only 36.2 per cent of men and 38.7 percent of women said they were virgins.
Nearly 90 per cent of the respondents said they want to get married “sometime in the future.”
But 30 per cent of the 2,706 men sampled and 26 per cent of the 2,570 female respondents said they were not currently looking for a relationship.

“They want to tie the knot eventually. But they tend to put it off as they have gaps between their ideals and the reality,” Futoshi Ishii, head researcher for the study, told Japan Times. “That’s why people marry later or stay single for life, contributing to the nation’s low birthrate.”
An organisation called Virgin Academia, set up by the non-profit organisation White Hands, now offers lectures focusing on how to establish healthy relationships, as well as activities such as nude life drawing classes.
The lack of sexual activity can seem at odds with a society saturated with sexual images, from television and manga comics to city billboards.
But recent years have seen a shift in traditional family structures, and a protracted economic slowdown as a global powerhouse, which has reportedly resulted in many men struggling to hold down secure, full-time jobs.

ahahaha what a bunch of fucking lolcows lmao

Can't really blame men to not have a big desire to deal with the fairer sex.

After all, "starting a Family" means "become a full-time workslave for the next couple decades, have as little contact with your family as possible and then - when you don't die of stress - you might enjoy a life of a divorced senior, the moment you retire and your wife has no desire to hang around the house with you there."

Not even being edgy, the japanese workforce has it really rough and a lot of marriages fail when the men retire and both partners realize that a) the guy has no hobby of his own and b) husband and wife have nothing in common.

And for that, you first need to even have a shot at getting a steady job. Without that, you'll not gonna impress japanese women (that seem to be oddly materialistic in such cases).

Add to that all the other problems with society (thin walls, no privacy) and that's just a desaster waiting to happen.

Edit: also though it's just wikipedia, it's interesting to read their article on "herbivore men" / Soushoku danshi.

japan's population is willingly shrinking because it's unsustainable.

it's a 1st world county with a 3rd world population what do you expect. As long as they don't bring in any niggers or other subhumans this population shrinkage will be a good thing in the long run.
Yeah, joking aside, I kind of agree. There's nothing wrong with having a smaller population, and for a country like Japan that has very little hospitable land to live on, it's probably for the better.

It's fucking terrible. A smaller population means there's no young economically active population to sustain their social policies like health care or social security. And the fucking japanese old farts live like a 100 years each.

Not necessarily, right now Japan is literally overpopulated. Like, there's barely any room to fit anybody. That's why there's such a lack of privacy in places like Tokyo today.

It becomes a problem when you have to support a very long-lived population by taxing workers who there are fewer of every year, and on top of that many of them are going hikikomori and refusing to work too.

They're simultaneously overpopulated and underpopulated because they have the most old people (over 60) per capita, while they're facing a shortage of working age population.

They don't shrink "willingly". It just so happens that the population is growing incredibly old and the birthrates are atrocious due to social and economical reasons. Meaning the population is not only shrinking, but also aging at a speed that is unparalleled internationally (despite ie. Germany having a far lower birth rate).

I do agree that this might turn out as a slight advantage in the far off future, but in the meantime, that is going to put a lot of stress on Japan's already weakened finances.
Basically, at some point, the population might end up stable and when that happens, they might have a balance of available jobs that are actually in demand and a young worforce eager to work.
However that will take a long time to reach, might never even happen and until then, Japan is going through a lot of shit that makes the wait by no means worth it.

Also, in a lot of cases old workers take away the opportunity for younger people to even get a job. And without a stable job, how are they going to found, let alone support a family?
Freeters live really shitty lives, so no wonder many people decide to not be part of a system that fucks them over at every turn.

That and the overpopulation is ony true for the urban areas in the heart of Japan, from Tokyo to Fukuoka. Hokkaido and many other remote places suffer from shrinking (and aging) populations.

at this rate Japan will look like a 28 days later ghost town, since their "replacement rate" (2.1 kids per household) is low and has been low for a while.

Even in Japan they look down on anime; they, the older generation, think it's what has been reducing fertility rates, since a waifu is "just as good" as a wife

Also America's replacement rate has been nearing the edge of 2.1 for a while as well, let's not just examine Japan only

I agree that populations need to grow forever or the world economy will collapse.

That's why it is immoral for women to refuse to reproduce with autistic tomgirls. women's reproductive faculties need to be used to make a manchild consumer class to keep the international toy markets afloat.

Honestly, how many japanese people does the world even need?

These people are hard workers, literally working themselves to death, which leaves little time for romantic encounters or socialization.
They remain income slaves to their families until a very unhealthy age, so that decreases their sex appeal to potential mates. Culturally, Japan has become very social awkward compared to how it used to be.
