Mouse - also known as DOOM Cuphead - One of classic Mickey's first major venture into the public domain will be in videogame form

No, your eyes have not deceived you. This is not a game made by MDHR, despite the fact that it looks like black and white Cuphead. Mouse is being made by a studio called Fumi Games. Fumi Games is the videogame brand of an animation studio based in Poland called Fumi Studio. They are currently working on another Cuphead clone called Galaxy Taxi.

It's due to be released in 2025, which means that whoever came up with the idea took to long to decide to capitalize on Mickey's liberation. The game will feature 2D animated characters set against realistic backgrounds, a la Who Framed Roger Rabbit.

I appreciate the attempt. It doesn't look particularly high quality. Maybe it's just me, I just don't see the art style being executed as well as Cuphead or the same creativity/autistic knowledge of all animation history. But it doesn't have to meet the gold standard to be good. I've had my eye on this one for a long time and am happy that:
1) People are making Cupheadlikes that aren't the same video game genre (like Forbidden Portals, or whatever it's called)
2) They didn't give up when their first trailer got horrible response

If they're making it like DOOM, I wonder if it will succeed at having a similar variety of enemies, weapons, and gameplay loop? What made DOOM the reboot work was that each enemy had a different weapon/technique that worked well at taking it down (like jumping over a pinky and double-tapping it, for example) that meant constantly cycling through different weapons, different micro-tasks, that made combat rhythmic, satisfying, memorable. Other shooters miss that point.

Yeah, this was not retooled around public domain. It's different enough anyways. They first put out a trailer, for god knows what reason, that had the enemies and weapons and stuff but against pre-pre-pre-pre-pre-alpha white backgrounds. That made a horrible impression on a community that really wanted something like Mouse but had no faith in it. It seems they realized they should have waited until they had more substantial stuff before showing it off.

Devs would do well to not be too stuck on their "mouse" theme and have other anthropomorphic animals in it. That would be a great way to get that gameplay variety.

That or they can't be bothered to have some artistic integrity to make the maps have the same art direction because they wanted to be the first to release something Mickey-related when it became public domain.
What these devs have done is exactly what what Infinity Ward did with the Doom Guy microtransaction pack in Modern Warfare II, aka the bare minimum.
Cuphead worked because it was meant to emulate the old cartoons from the start.

That's what prompted me to say that this was originally going to be a generic boomer shooter. Mickey entering the public domain in January 1st, 2024 has been common knowledge for years now and Cuphead came out in 2017. If someone planned this from the start, then they would've been able to get a release date before 2025.

I strongly dislike modern derivatives of Doom. What makes this one interesting for me is seeing those flat 2D sprites have fluid animations. They don't look flat like the characters in 1993 Doom. You may see it as a cynical cashgrab that's ripping off current trends, but it does present an interesting idea.

B&W palette forces them to design the visual with contrast in mind. It's incredibly hard to do, and the current looks aren't cutting it. I know that in actually hand-drawn animation background is less distinct from the pieces that move (like in the Flintstones or old Bugs Bunny you could sort of tell what was going to happen since that one door was standing out from the rest), but the world desperately needs some kind of outline. Maybe they should try cel-shading, too, for a more cartoony look.

Comparing it to Cuphead really doesn't do it any favors, it looks like XIII in black/white.
All the enemies, apart from two drones, and a stationary boss they show twice, are just these standard goons that run at you shooting, which looks really lame.
Level wise this seems to rely on corridors a lot, even the open areas seem really boxed in.
The black/white thing will turn into a annoying eyestrain once the novelty is gone, there's probably a reason I can't think of any other game going for a fully black/white style.

This is the studio's second major game, their first game was a literal Cuphead clone they put on ice:

This has more in common with modern calarts than it does with 90's style. No need to correct the OP since it's not even out yet.

To be fair cartoons from that era didn't have that many characters on the screen at once. I see where you're coming from though.

The game could benefit from more distinctive shadows in my opinion. I have a feeling this will be an early access game.

Looks like a black and white Flash game with Cuphead assets filtered through a CalArts lens. I don't hate it, but I'm not overly excited about it either.

Serious Sam x Cuphead
I hope they pull it off.
Looks nothing like the former. SS is huge, sprawling arenas with anywhere between 30 and 100 enemies rushing your ass from every direction.

I saw the initial trailer and fell in love. I love shooters, I love 30s era media. It's cute in a menacing way. Is it going to be a linear shooter or a DOOM style shooter? I hope it will release on console. There needs to be more "punch" with weapon reactions against enemies.
