market cap is just "current share price" times "outstanding shares"
There are 100 shares of Final Solution Corp™ available, you own 10, Null owns 90, I buy one from you for $10, the market cap is 100 * 10 = 1000.
But that may not be the actual "value" of the company, and if Null tried to dump his 90 shares, there may be only 20 buyers, and the price could crater.
Since it is just the share price writ large, it goes up and down kinda randomly and only is really noticeable over long periods of time where it is moving AGAINST its market segment.
