It's totally appropriate they push people trying to "help" them away, because running after people (or animals) begging to help them is pathetic and worthy of disdain. As is common with obsessive behaviors, people often don't realize that them constantly trying to "help" is an expression of anxiety and insecurity on their part. They don't see the cruelty in it and how they're, in effect, stealing away the strength, knowledge, and sense of personal agency another stands to gain by trying to insert themselves, and how they'd be helping a lot more by being confident and having a sense of boundaries.

It isn't. Poverty threshold is around $20k for a family of three. Individual is like $12K. You don't even have to file federal if you're under that. I dunno how it would work in a family if the household was under, but an individual would be above. I'm sure you'd miss out on tax credits too.
