'No Stupid Questions' (NSQ) Internet & Technology Edition

  • 🐕 I am attempting to get the site runnning as fast as possible. If you are experiencing slow page load times, please report it.
Youtube DL is depreciated. Use Yt-Dlp.

Don't know how up on it you are, so here is a quick and dirty guide. Assuming you are using Windows. Download yt-dlp and FFmpeg Unzip both files. There will be a folder with some exes in it called "bin" in the ffmpeg zip. Put the yt-dlp, ffmpeg, ffplay and ffprobe exes into one folder somewhere on your hard drive. Open a CMD window, navigate to the folder you put all your shit in. Type yt-dlp and then paste the video url after it.
Do you have anything with a GUI on it, thats alot to do for a video.

Make a folder called "Youtube" on your desktop. Unzip the script I have attached here and put the "Open Me" file into the folder you just made called Youtube. Unzip this and put "ffmpeg", "ffplay" and "ffprobe" from the "bin" folder into the Youtube folder you just made. Download this and put it in the Youtube folder you made. When you're done, you should have a folder that looks like this:
Folder.gif
Now all you have to do when you want to download a video is double click "Open Me" and paste the video URL when it asks. This is a simple script that automates opening yt-dlp and downloading a video in Windows for people who are not comfortable using command prompt.

I dunno, man. Play the video on your laptop and record it on your phone camera? Suicide? The world is your oyster.
These are the answers I am looking for. This is why I am here. I got the revolver ready!
if you need to download videos most of the time JDownloader2 does work.
I will check this out thanks. I used to use DVD Soft but it went from free to having audio saying "free version for non commercial use" in-front of everything. Then just stopped working outright.

That Tubular YouTube client I mentioned earlier on can also download, but it's only available on Android at the moment.

Someone brought a Google Nest into my home.

My initial thoughts are repulsion and that it's simply inviting the surveillance state in my kitchen.

I don't use a cellphone. Otherwise I'm a luddite tech normie with an Android tablet and a console.

How legitimate are my concerns?
since you have a tablet, and the console probably also being attached to the internet, you already have a 24/7 wiretap with your tablet, on top of a 24/7 wiretap google nest product.

enjoy prison stalker child.

but in all seriousness: as long as you don't do anything illegal, you shouldn't be worried about your safety, or your privacy. the glowies will find a reason to raid your ass with 6 bullets in the head and declare it suicide when they feel like it anyways.

I’m a complete novice at programming and am having trouble jumping from theory to practice. I understand the concepts and know some basic syntax in C and Python, but I am not the kind of person who can just apply theory without seeing it done first. I really need to look at some simple source code in context to understand how it all fits together, but I’m such a beginner I don’t even know where to look. Where can I do this?

Um, github?
https://github.com/Ak500k/Passwd-Manager looks simple enough.
Just troll through searching for "webapp" "python game" or similar.

My phone updated to Android 11 while I was sleeping and now the salute emoji is gone. Why can I no longer respect our brave troops on mobile. Anyone else having this? I looked it up and couldn't find anyone complaining so I'm confused.

And I don't mean just gone from my keyboard. If you send me a salute emoji I won't see it at all, just a question mark.

Dammit they took away our dog whistles

For everyone who has signed up to KF using Protonmail, and doesn't use that address for anything else, Proton has sent all users a notification that long-inactive free accounts will be closed.

To prevent this from happening you must log into your account at least once in the next year. Also, if you use the VPN associated with that address you ought to be OK, as they referred to "making use of the account".

NB: This does not apply to paid users.

Am I the only one that has to sign into Kiwifarms after 30 days and get a code from my mail address? Because if everyone has to do this shit I would think this is a non-issue. Then again might be overlooking something.

I thought they already did that?
Looks like I've been logging onto my alts without any reason up until now.

Looking forward to another warning in 2026.

"help us reduce our carbon footprint"

Gay ESG posturing, just admit you're doing this for the same reason every other minor e-mail service deletes inactive free account user data. You want to save storage space.
That's what they're saying, just in a really gay way. "Help us reduce our carbon footprint" == "Help us avoid having to buy and run new storage drives". There is no other conceivable "carbon footprint" of an email account.
