Is there anyone on kf that enjoys offroad driving or 4x4ing? I didn't see a thread anywhere on it. I know there's the car thread but this is more specifically about offroad vehicles, trucks, dirtbikes, atvs, side by sides, even snowmobiles, things like that or people's off roading stories.

I'm lucky enough to live pretty close to some logging roads that lead up into the mountains. They've got lots of little side spurs and paths that wind off. All through the mountains there's hidden lakes and waterfalls, view points over looking river valleys and shit and even some actual caves.

The roads all kind of vary from not to bad to holy fuck we're going down the cliff if we miss this turn slightly.

I've got an old 4x4 f150 that's a bit run down, you've gotta get out and lock the hubs manually, but it can get over some pretty rough and sketchy stuff. It's pretty sturdy and durable, if maybe a little scary some times.

lock the hubs
I enjoy watching Matt's Offroad Recovery from time to time, and he does this on the Morrvair a lot, but I never understood why... they aren't always locked? What does it actually do?
No, I don't have any off-road experience.

I do some mild off-roading with my Tiger 1200. It's about an 80/20 road/offroad bike though.

I have rear wheel drive when it's in 2 wheel drive mode. The hubs are set to free so they can freely spin as the vehicle moves. You lock them for 4 wheel drive mode so the transmission can send power to the front wheels as well and make them spin with the engine. Modern 4 wheel drive vehicles have a system of vacuums that lock the hubs automatically when you engage it. Older vehicles had manual locks. You need to actually get out and turn a little switch on the hubs.

I like driving on my neighbors' lawns. They like to call it a "felony", but it's off-road to me

I took a fancy Suburban with center locks and hi lo gears light off roading. It's fun and I want a suv now.
