On nihilism and "subverting expectations" trend - Hack writing or a symptom of something more?

So this isn't news, we been seeing that theme all over the place in the new starwars trilogy, tlou2, game of thrones, etc...

On one side I can see how its a sort of lazy attempt at being "deep", like how darth vader jr. told the mary sue in the 2nd starwars reboot that she was a nobody and her parents were drunkards who sold her for booze, not the lost daughter of skywalker or the one like anakin was. Same with tlou2's over-extended theme of "revenge bad!" that its but a series of gruesome moments for impact not unlike a cheap horror game full of jumpscares, it could've been done much better.

As for game of thrones, the least said the better.

In one part I wonder if this isn't just a gimmick, a marketing trend, since we saw those in the past.

And then I think it might be a symptom of something else, of how "nothing ever happens" anymore you know?. For example a lot of people in my generation thought obama was seriously going to send bush and his cronies to jail over the war of terror, but nothing happened because at its core the political class does believe in class solidarity and would never send one of their own to jail, if only because they don't want to set a precedent that could come back to them in the future. He also didn't get us out of the middle east and we ended up being there for 12 more years.

Then we had 2008, corruption on a level that made banana republics look good. And again nobody went to jail, I think only one banker did besides that madoff fuck. Big tech its already getting away with everything, the odds those companies getting broken up and/or their executives going to jail are next to zero.

So is this trend in fiction just a reflection of our reality? like all the downer scifi of the 70's during the malaise?

Weird that they do this in an era of 24/7 escapism, people don't want to escape from their shit reality to a shit fantasy. But that might explain while many of these films are games are doing like shit in terms of sales even if every reviewer is gargling their balls.

Because everything else is shit. A lot of media that isn't pure escapism doesn't work with the internet because they don't have the patience for character development, and some autists will re-watch each episode of a series 5 times to try to guess what happens next.
