Diseased Open Source Software Community - it's about ethics in Code of Conducts

  • 🐕 I am attempting to get the site runnning as fast as possible. If you are experiencing slow page load times, please report it.
Stop shitting up the OSS Community thread with your lazy software recommendation requests. We have a Linux General thread and a Software Recommendation thread in Technology board. If you actually used Linux you wouldn't need someone to tell you which one isn't pozzed or whatever.

I've never understood why anyone used even the "good" version of Gnome, let alone 3 and up. Too much bloat and resource usage.
I have a feeling that Gnome 2, many moons ago was mostly pushed by RedHat, who wanted to have a GUI for everything in their linux version. That way they could train people in using that GUI to cash in from training and/or have a more Windows Server like experience to cater to less command-line-able sysadmins and techies. That's the reason why gnome 2 was not a bad graphical environment, it was not beautiful, in fact it looked like windows 98 with an icon pack but it got the job done and with a few styling patches here and there it was quite powerful and spawned a lot of nice DEs.

Gnome 3 decided to fuck all and target what feels like some barely-existent segment of 12"+ touch only devices not running Android or Windows ARM, for reasons unknown to me. I have a feeling there is some group deep inside gnome who is responsible for sabotaging the project by promoting the most ridiculous design choices in UI - like invisible scrollbars, or putting UI elements on the window bar which makes it either incredibly fat and wastes space or makes it impossible to easily grab the window, hiding everything behind nondescript symbolic menus and so on. Ubuntu's Unity was half as bad in that regard, as in being actually usable once you pin all the common programs and terminal to the taskbar/launcher.

Given that modern RHEL and Fedora now use Gnome 3, I think that the role of graphical interface in these systems fell into background, and I think it's consistent with a general shift of paradigm to text based interfaces in proffessional settings (see WSL and powershell for example). So now gnome 3 devs are left to their own, getting high on their own farts and keep coming up with more UI horror bullshit.

Anyway, thread tax:

A post from Mario Zechner is doing rounds on the fediverse where he notes that all posts on bsky are publicly available via an API endpoint. Also, using the fact that his post went viral, he edited it a few times by now to insert some spam into the head of it. Pardon me if it was already posted on the farms - I have to catch up the fediverse thread.

This is particularly interesting because most users on bsky think that they are in a secure walled garden where only people with invites are allowed, and that the invites are monitored and violators are removed from the cool kids club. But now it seems that all the degenerate content can be yours with just a few API calls.

This and the other incidents show that BlueSky api is very permissive, in May this man, zhuowei, downloaded all the posts:

There is, but their focus is less tablets and more on the fact that they're all using Apple to do their dev work. Things like hidden scrollbars, widgets on the toolbar, locking down functionality to allow only the proscribed way, they're all aping macos and apple. Even apparently unrelated things, like systemd, which everyone assumes is meant to be like the windows services manager, is actually a behavioural and conceptual clone of macos launchd. Red Hat (and a great deal of the wider community, in fact) is riddled with developers who use MacOS and they've spent most of this time trying to make the gnome environment familiar to their daily drivers. Ever bad decision made in gnome 3 began with the thought: "What if we made it more like MacOS?"

Fucking amazing. This is the sort of rookie design decision that a place populated by supposedly veteran developers shouldn't be making.

Mastodon has a public open API (that's how I scraped hector's posts for analysis) as well, but it does not advertise itself as a walled garden. I'm all for open APIs but as far as I know bsky web app requires an account to read posts and the account needs an invite code. But now the emperor has no clothes and the entire "private and safe space" narration turned out to be a lie because you can just read posts with the API.

So there's a one page site called useplaintext.email (a) that unfortunately happens to be maintained by the one and only Drew DeVault. It advocates for using plain text email and tells people how to do it.

Well, some guy named Kev came along and wrote an article about his issues with the site.

source (a)

The article is quite frankly boring. So why am I posting about this?

Well it's because Drew wrote a response article that includes this tidbit at the end:

source (a)

Guys, his feelings were hurt by Kev's choice of words, and he really should have talked to him in private first, he's the baddie here guys!

Reminds me of Linus Tech Tips' first response to the Gamers Nexus video being "waa he didn't reach out in private first!"

To be fair, Drew did end up changing the page with his feedback but this comes across as throwing a tantrum for no reason.

Plaintext autism... I've not seen that in about 20 years. No surprise that it's DDV.

IIRC Drew is practising "non-violent communication", which he endorses on his poz masc site, and is supposed to be better in some ill-defined way. It winds British people up especially, because it comes across as passive-aggressive and sarcastic.

(Kev did nothing wrong, by the way.)

me too
Please remove me from this list.

All this aside, the ASCII Ribbon Campaign was a thing already in 1998 when Drew was eating his boogers as a kid. But of course he had to make a separate campaign to be in charge. Some of these people...

So, the experience she supposedly has that "Holly served as the Executive Director of the BioBricks Foundation, an international, open-source biotechnology nonprofit."

I went digging through archives of the BioBricks Foundation, and it seems like she's never actually worked there.

I don't think this was a diversity hire, I think Holly just lied on her resume and GNOME didn't do any checking.

I have since found evidence that she worked there, in the position she claims to have. The website is just organized poorly. Alternatively, I'm retarded.

I don't know if it's already been discussed here, but the developer of GNU Parallel, Ole Tange, is a massive, raging autist.

1698340263499.png

  • His software is using GNU GPL, but it demands that you either cite it when using it for anything remotely academic, or pay him 10,000€. The program makes you type "will cite", interrupting your work. Asking for removing this function makes him sperg out: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/parallel/+bug/1779764
  • Naturally, since GNU GPL lets you simply remove the notice yourself, he threatens people who distribute binaries without it mentioning the name "GNU Parallel" with lawsuits. Apparently he registered it as a trademark and is happy to go to the lawyers at the slightest provocation.
  • He keeps scanning the web and bug trackers of various projects and distros, ready to pop up and chew out anyone mentioning GNU Parallel. He's fucking everywhere. Debian maintainers put his program under non-free, because it violates the rule that it prevents exercising the four essential software freedoms depending on the field of endeavor. https://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=905674
  • He calls out people who wanted to remove the notice by name in his source code:
    • citation_notice(); # This is because _YOU_ actively make it harder to justify # spending time developing GNU Parallel by removing it. # If you disagree, please read (especially 77-): # [URL]https://www.fordfoundation.org/media/2976/roads-and-bridges-the-unseen-labor-behind-our-digital-infrastructure.pdf[/URL] # *YOU* will be harming free software by removing the notice. You # accept to be added to a public hall of shame by removing the # line. That includes you, George and Andreas.
  • Whenever anything tangentially related is mentioned on StackOverflow, he uses the opportunity to shill his project, no matter how bad it is for the job at hand. His profile

Also, Drew DeVault came out as gay:

I actually agree with the 7-bit ASCII concept. No viruses, no shit, it will be a permanent record and compatible with anything for literally forever, etc. But I'm an elderly faggot and Drew DeVault is just a plain old absolute cum junkie faggot fairy fuck. The concept should have better advocates and not people who make you want to vomit.

YOU WILL READ MY SPAM OR PAY ME 10.000$ TO FUND MY FUNCOPOP COLLECTION AND STUDENT LOANS, STALKER CHILD.
IT IS OF THE GREATEST IMPORTANCE TO FREE SOFTWARE THAT YOU NOT HESSITATE TO PAY ME THIS RANSOM! IT IS IN YOUR BEST INTERESTS, STALKER CHILD!
REMOVING THE DIGITAL SOAPBOX UNDERNEATH MY STUBBY LEGS WILL NOT GO UNPUNISHED, FOOLISH STALKER! DO NOT EVEN CONTEMPLATE DOING THAT !
THE E-POLICE WILL BE NOTIFIED OF YOUR CHILDISH SUBTERFUGE, AND THE CONSEQUENCES WILL BE MOST SEVERE ! YOU DO NOT WANT TO FIND YOURSELF ON MY LIST!
YOU WILL BE SHAMED ON MASTODON BY AT LEAST 5 BEAUTIFUL TRANSWOMXN WHO CONTRIBUTE NOTHING OF VALUE TO THIS COMMUNITY!
MY EYES ARE EVERPRESENT AND ALL-SEEING, SO DO NOT EVEN THINK ABOUT CHANGING THE CODE OF THIS OPEN SOURCE PROGRAM, STALKER CHILD.
UNDER NO CIRCUMSTANCES MAY YOU IGNORE ME LIKE I AM A CRAZY PERSON YELLING AT CLOUDS! YOU WILL RESPECT ME OR SUFFER, IMMATURE CHILD!

Modern Open Source devs are somehow even more insane than game devs. (Emulators count as open source here)
You hand these clowns the tiniest bit of popularity and they instantly start powertripping like someone put cocaine into their soylent.
Its like a good chunk of these dummies actually despises the terms and ideas of open source,
but knows deep down that they are too incompetent to ever release a commercial product without using other people as a crutch.
So instead of getting a job (which they *totally* could at any minute, they just choose not to), they E-Beg like a somehow even more entitled version of a titty-streamer.
If only the open source community had more balls to just bully people like this into submission.

Then again, it seems like most members of it are just waiting for their turn to attempt to boss around anyone unfortunate enough to have any use for "their" projects.
And then these sociopathic retards are somehow surprised that nobody with a "neurotypical" brain wants to give them any money.

Not gay, "queer", whatever that might mean.

I couldn't find anything about his partner, but he's always "they", and has a STEM PhD. So given what we know about his proclivities, I'm guessing a they/them TIM.

So yeah, gay, but he might call himself something else.

Oh yeah, you're definitely qualified to teach expert level networking after a quick skim of the technical specs on fucking BGP.

STEM people have a serious problem with gatekeeping
Yes Drew, that's exactly what a hiring process is for.

My impressions of BGP are a) that it's complicated, and b) you piss a lot of people off if you get it wrong, so it doesn't sound at all unwarranted to me.
