There's always been a strange parasocial component to Godot's community and even marketing, going beyond mere brand loyalty. "It's not just a toolset, it's a friend!"

You will find Ego's are wrapped up tightly in FOSS and Open Source projects.
Take Drew Devault and Daniel Micay and the rest. When there is no money changing hands, it is ego and clout that is the currency.

Defold (Lua)

I'm looking at alternatives just for my own interest, and Defold kinda fucking blows. It has no core OS functionality, meaning basic functions like resizing windows, borderless windows/borderless fullscreen, etc. are not available in the core and have to be downloaded separately as a third party library. Sure you can fuck with FFI, but why the fuck are you using a game engine if you're going to be calling C code anyways? The whole point of a game engine for the majority of users is to be an abstraction layer so that you can focus on developing gameplay and presentation. Defold just seems really immature for desktop (as does Lua as a whole, but that's another rant for another time). Maybe it's fine for mobile, since that's what it seems it's intended for, but missing basic desktop features is a huge drawback for me.
