The real SJWs aren't pissed about the weird BDSM reference via Pulp Fiction. They're pissed that "gimp" has ableist connotations, i.e. someone with a "gimp leg."

There's actually a bit of an age gap here, I think. Anyone older than a millenial (and let's face it, probably nearly all of the devs fall into this bucket) is going to probably go with the earlier definition, someone with a gimp limb.

Anyone associating "gimp" with Tarantino is probably a bit younger (or a bit more perverted). If GIMP was actually named in homage to that film, the SJWs would be all "ohhh muh brave fight against kinkshammming" or some shit instead.

I'll be frank, I remember the term more from the film than it's old use but Pulp Fiction was a damn good film.

I found two really great exchanges on there that I think deserve to be capped. The first is JordiGH screeching about how it's better to just change the name because this debate will keep happening until the name is changed. He reacts very poorly to being told to fuck off, and eventually leaves while refusing to admit defeat by saying he's "tired." It's worth noting that JordiGH is the same person who linked the issue to lobste.rs and HN in order to facilitate a dog pile. The line that is cut off in the screenshot says, "So you're saying that those accounts on HN and Lobste.rs are not you even though they've both got the same name?" The second exchange is someone bringing up how "gimp" is an American slur, so bringing it up as if it's a major issue is an example of cultural imperialism. The person who raised the issue in the first place tries to make a rebuttal, but gets BTFO. No text is cut off in this screenshot, just emoji reactions.

Sites like this that have a persistent floating banner at the top are awful for screen capping programs, and I wish they didn't exist. Something about the site also seems to prevent it from being archived properly, because when I tried to save it with archive.fo, it just shows the first post. So, since the discussion has been locked, I decided to save the page in its entirety and upload it as a zip file in case the issue gets deleted or something. Also worth noting, the guy who made the issue has a reddit account, and he got assblasted in a thread on r/linux that was discussing his stupid change idea.

(Not an artist but) I've used GIMP and Photoshop and I think Photoshop is a little more intuitive. (GIMP got a UI change recently which helps, but its documentation isn't that great)
Of course it's way easier to ask someone to download and install a free program than for them to pay $650 or however much a license is for Photoshop.

Stallman is sooo close to having his own thread. I mean the foot-licking thing? fuck, man. And the quasi-pedo age-of-consent remarks he's made. But he doesn't really cause drama, at least not of the kind KF is generally interested in, so he only crosses the threshold for a ED article.

In some ways, he's sure as hell cemented the idea of Linux or OSS software users as being diagnosed with cerebral lulzy. But goofy as the fucker is, maybe someone has to drive the hard-line views, so there's room for the moderate open-source folks (i.e. those who don't call it fucking "GNU/Linux") to operate in without being branded as exceptional. I can't deny that he hasn't contributed to the idea of sharing code, not to mention certainly writing more code than myself.
