i always tell them to check matrix and see how federation works for them. does it work, sure. does 95% of the userbase still just use one instance? also yes.
matrix is the most shit example of federation out there don't recommend that jew cuckholdery

Matrix could have been really good, but the protocol got bloated and the base implementation shouldn't have been written in Python. The company just giving up on the Go version and pushing the Rust version on large government users soured everyone.

XMPP has a lot of faults, but it's a good example of an early federated protocol. Google even supported XMPP federation in GTalk, but pulled it silently around 2013, I think?

Google Wave was almost certainly killed when someone realized that they couldn't make a gated paid racket out of it.
Also, its plugin architecture was quite naive. A lot of basic stuff relied on 3rd party servers just being up forever.

Huh. I knew that Gentoo had been working of moving from SVN to Git, I didn't know that they had moved to GitHub. I've clearly been out of the loop for a while. I thought they were hosting their own infrastructure?
Someone already explained it here. But they do host their own infrastructure. They just have a mirror on github. And their are other mirrors as well you can find. They also set rsync as the default method of syncing still at this point, although for at least a year or two, maybe longer you've been able to set the sync method over to git instead. Which is generally the better move, it tends to be much faster.

All Matrix had to do was be a self-hosted and encrypted version of Discord. Voice chat, text chat, uploadable emotes. But it appears to be SaaS oriented now?

From what I understand, there's two parts to Matrix: a non-profit that technically writes the spec, and a commercial company that was brought on to make the reference implementations. But over time the for-profit more or less took control over the whole thing, where they will introduce shit and Matrix just rubber-stamps it, while any independent proposals and contributions are stuck in limbo.

I was watching todays mati just now. At one part Josh says "now something I really care about gen 2" then he paused.

I thought he was going to talk about the gentoo thing or something. And I was confused why he would care about it at all. Lol. But he obviously meant it like I spelled it about anthropic.

Edit. Lol he actually was talking about gentoo. He just took a while to get to it. I'm surprised.

It's pretty late but i couldn't see anyone mentioning it using search.

The Bazzite people banned their sole developer for the modded kernel and the Handheld-Daemon components.

Reason seems to be it was because he called another developer retarded and said that the users were right to complain if an untested patch causes their disk to get wiped.

and using the T-word without a fookin loicense.

He also seems to have joined hands with Framework to build a nazi-pub or something? I'll admit i'm out of my depth here.

So going back to the admin who initiated the ban, this "Gospodin Kyle" who exactly is he?

Oh gee, thanks Microsoft! Another one down for the count.
you do not know how BAD the bazzite linux discord server is. Its literally 1930s fucking Germany.

You make ONE mistake they will shame, make fun of you and mock you.

But if you say ONE wrong thing that the jannys dont like. EVEN if its as something as simple as a tech opinion they disagree with they will give you a PERMA BAN WITH NO APPEAL

As far as I know you can still do all of that. You can self host, and all the other things you would expect with a federated service.

But there is also the main server that people who aren't self hosting use to host rooms. Which is probably a smart move to get a higher user count. Which as far as I can tell is the main thing holding back matrix. Everyone uses discord. And like youtube people want to go where other people are. But matrix does things just as well as discord for almost anything people will care about. And it does some important things a lot better. Like having end to end encryption for dms. And not having to rely on one company to use the service, so if you get blocked you're fucked.

Are you the one that was mad about getting banned over not liking flatpaks?

I don't understand why it would be a big problem unless the big place for bug testing and support from Bazzite is that Discord server.
If it is, I'm glad that I don't run it, recipe for disaster.

I want something I run on my own hardware. Matrix fails to do anything as well as Discord.

You can host it on your hardware as far as I know. There are people that do host it themselves. Just not on the matrix.org server obviously.

I'm not sure what else you would want. You set up your own server, and you host things you want to on it. And those connect to other servers so people that use those can join yours. Unless you mean something completely different I really don't see what you mean when you say you can't run it on your own hardware.

I can host it but it's worse than Discord, and if it's worse than Discord I might as well use something else that isn't nearly as retarded like XMPP

I still host a synapse homeserver. By default it still uses a central identity server that gets your e-mail for .. reasons. You can turn that off, but it's not the default.

In the early days Matrix was good for bridging chats. I had a Facebook bridge, Hangouts bridge, etc. But the bridges were all kinda fragile, mostly because Facebook/Google/LinkedIn did not like anyone not using their web interface. A lot of times you had to proxy your web connect through the box the bridge was hosted on or else FB/Google/MS/whatever would flag you as malicious and cut off the bridge bot. Two-way bridges were not trivial to setup either. But if you got it working, it was sorta like a modern version of Trillian or Adium.

Eventually I just got rid of social media, making bridges worthless. I don't think there has ever been a production XMPP bridge. The Signal bridge was the only decent one, but it depended on signald which was flakey. Eventually the implemented signald directly in the bridge, but I gave up on Matrix/synapse at that point. None of my friends were using it anymore.

Element isn't a great client, but I'm surprised people prefer Discord over it. The discord UI is terrible, but it's probably better at talking/streaming. There were other Matrix clients like Mirage (Qt based) but it was difficult to keep up with all the Matrix protocol bullshit and it eventually went unmaintained. Sadly a lot of the old XMPP clients are also unmaintained and/or going to shit in their newer releases.
