Whoever wrote this has never been close to academia. Being good in science has nothing to do with being politically-conscious, you can have a maths PhD and vote for the most populist party because they promise price freezes. The two most intelligent people I know are borderline schizos who study MKULTRA or ancient manuscripts in their free time.

Instead of actually improving their code (to break the great firewall), the Hysteria project decided to use money and do the pull the most weeb shit thing ever, and commissioned anime mascots artwork because reasons (archive).
(This shit happened in 2024 but I thought it was funny/SAD! to bring up since I didn't see it until recently)

bro. I know null hates dealing with storage, but how long has he been running this site now? I would think you would sit down, for like a few weeks or a month at some point, and try doing as much research as possible on how to keep drives in good working condition. Is there something about it that's harder than I think it is? Or does he just have the shittiest luck possible?

My guess is that most of the multi-million dollar operating budget goes to cheese. There's very little left over for hardware, and even less for redundant enterprise hardware. Good drives, properly tuned will last. Shoestring budget drives may not. Also having in-chassis or at least on-hand spares are important. Saying 50% wear sounds like SSD, there may be some tuning at play or simply the wrong type of drives(read mostly for a write mostly workload, for instance).

Drives don't last forever especially when they're pounded by us retards. He's also only very recently been able to get a secure source of money (the checks).

I feel like this isn't the first time this has happened since I've had my account. I know drives will go out with use. But I have a feeling somethings not configured properly. (or he had shit drives or something at one point). I'm pretty sure within 2 years this is at least the second time he's had to do this, but I could be the third I can't remember.

He had hardware failures a couple years ago. I think those were not the drives talked about today but the ones doing database or similar. Apparently it was one of those failures where everyone says "Wow, I've never heard of that happening before." Luckily Null has very good luck with computers, I guess his desktop setup at home went similarly well.

I distinctly remember it was something about drives. Because he's been complaining about filesystems and storage for a while now. I think there was some other weird hardware failure too. But I remember there was for sure something not that long ago where he had issues with drives failing.

And yeah on his personal pc he tightened the screws wrong, or didn't have some spacer that was supposed to be their when he was fastening in his motherboard, and it bent slightly. Causing some weird failure lol. I would probably go boss man jack on a wall if I was trouble shooting that.

In my experience nonwhites have a much more positive opinion of AI since it's kind of an equalizer, requiring fewer skilled workers.
A couple i know even had a domestic over 'ethical AI' where the guy, a brit, thought it was the devil, while the girl, an Iranian, was super excited over not having to read as much paperwork.

deepseek-r1:70b is alright for small scripts, but loading a proper codebase you basically need 100b + context size . That's not practical for home lab users who didn't buy multiple 32GB MI50 when they were cheap.
Will say 7b models are good for specific stuff like live audio denoising and transcription.
