HN has spergout that describing overheating servers as "melting" is not true and honest.

Maybe HN needs its own *Extremely Serious and Highly Intelligent* thread.

HN definitely needs its own thread.

I agree. /r/programmingcirclejerk used to make fun of their smarter-than-thou attiude until the admins made very reddit ban on "socialjerking".
It's gone dead but you might enjoy still
N-Gate rustled Paul Graham's jimmies enough that if you post an n-gate link to Hacker News the submission gets automatically dropped.
I think my favourite meme to come from HN weirdos is putting inline footnotes on 4 word long messages[1]

Heresy! A true hacker news would count from zero[0]

Lmao on serial liar and suicide faker Hector's vanity project:

"Asahi (business model: "Uber for Yellow Dog Linux") goes to an extraordinary amount of effort to remove half of the value of expensive computers, and replace it with a shivering basket case of an operating system. Hackernews desperately wants to appear so technically-inclined as to run a gimmick operating system on overpriced luxury computers, but since the shit doesn't actually work and there's no benefit to getting it working, nobody has much to discuss."

Did it ever come out why the n-gate guy stopped? His shit was hilarious and I really liked his FOSDEM reviews. :(

Can't believe I'm going to defend Reddit moderators here, but they want to avoid the fate where 90% of all threads are thinly veiled politics, as happens to almost all /r/BadBlah reddits. And it works really well, PCJ is consistently funny.

I like to think some butthurt billionaire is paying him not to post. From his Patreon:

I'd give up posting for a few thousand a month.

It one of the better subreddits. I gave up on it a few years ago when the rules on socialjerking meant that submissions started to get very repeatative as was the reply copypasta.

lmao when the byuu stuff was happening I could never understand what this thing was actually supposed to be so I assumed it must be some weird use case but this explains it pretty well: it's just some faggot shit

The problem with the ban on "socialjerking" is that HN's popular posts are now mostly political stories unrelated to tech and on the few remaining tech posts the comments will bring up politics almost instantly.

There are also clear organized brigades on that site from groups like /r/fuckcars and the 50 Cent Army (if you criticize China in any way you will get dozens of replies claiming the US is worse and reciting obvious propaganda lines like "China allows foreign companies as long as they comply with Chinese law".

Only tangentally on topic, but I thought it was interesting. Explaining Computers did this video on the FOSS RISC-V (pronounced "risk five") CPU architecture back in May, but I just recently saw it.

In a world where x86-64 dominates but ARM, while not yet eating x86's lunch, is tying on a bib and picking up a fork, there doesn't really seem like there's much room for another player. Oh, RISC-V architecture specifications and in some cases entire chip designs are open, and that's great, but it doesn't really do 99.9999% of computer users much good since they'll never be in a position to actually manufacture their own chips anyway.

But Christopher brings up some interesting points starting at 10:34 that have given me pause. tl;dw: Right now the Arm org doesn't make its own hardware, but a while back it was rumored that Nvidia was going to acquire them, and companies that were rivals to Nvidia were concerned they wouldn't be able to license Arm tech if that were to happen; this isn't an issue with an open architecture. Also, in cases of sanctions, Arm as an American company may not be able to license their tech to companies in world-stage-pariah countries like Russia and China, both of which have apparently already kicked off initiatives to start up domestic RISC-V chip production. Maybe in a decade or two we'll be looking at a weird tech cold war where "western countries" primarily use Arm and x86 hardware but China, Russia, and an orbit of other shunned countries like Iran and North Korea are using primarily RISC-V hardware. Interesting.

About 15 years ago the Chinese tried to do this with MIPS processors. The plan was to replace government and military use of Windows and Intel with a Chinese built MIPS and Linux distro.

It's still under development but doesn't appear to have the kind of adoption they were expection.
On the flip side it gave us the Lemote Yeeloong which is the world's freest laptop. Stallman used it for years until switching to an X200 with Libreboot.

The only thing stopping us from the mass linux desktop adoption is... not enough Western sanctions? lol
MIPS is pretty old tho and I'm not sure how those architecture decisions affect the performance. It's most famous for being used by the N64 and by universities teaching assembly.

packages.sury.org/php/apt.gpg not available through IPv6

This is an archive of a GitHub issue about how a certain Debian package repository was not accessible through IPv6 in the Year of Our Lord Two Thousand Twenty-Two. Who gives a shit? Well, a certain slobbermutt, that's who. Josh bumps the issue with a complaint that the project owner dismisses; Josh then replies with a workaround on how to get it working via IPv6 anyway, and even donates $250 to the project so they can get it properly implemented.

Someone with a brand new account called "End-Kiwifarms" posts about how the user jaw-sh is in fact JOSHUA CONNER MOON, responsible for the death of three hundred thousand trans muslims of color.

To which the project owner responds with profanity and pledges to block KF's servers from accessing his repos. Liz Fong-fucking-Jones is all too happy to oblige with a list of IP addresses. The issue then devolves to a shitshow of people arguing the ethics of doing this sort of thing before it's ultimately closed.

By the way, I linked to an archive because Josh's first reply to the issue and every subsequent reply has been memory-holed on the live issue, including the one in which Josh provides a workaround to the initial problem. So fuck you if you wanted a solution to connecting to the repo via IPv6, I guess.

This was brought to my attention by CrunkLord via this fedi post. You can check out that thread if you want some more info and bantz about it.

You can see all the comments on the previous snapshot.

At least someone on the team was sound enough to cover up all of the owner's retardation when he responded to Josh with all his expertise. You can see that in the last comment he was willing to block KF on the CDN but couldn't due to his provider not supporting IPv6 blocks.

Chris Hagnagy as mentioned before has sued Defcon for defamation. Some cockroaches are scrambling because the discovery process will reveal more details and who the supposed victims are. These people really don't like due process. You should be able to know what you are being accused of and by who. This dumbass claims to want to protect victims, but if they are really victims what's actually going to happen to him if they come out in the open? These are far left assholes who just want to weaponize a CoC. Sad to see this kind of sexism, racism, and lack of care for human decency and Justice that these people have. If people like to stop going to technical conferences it would be for the best. They are much more of a clout chaser than an actually useful person.
