To be honest. It's still not ready yet. And they will be the first to tell you that. It's a ton of work to do what they are doing. So I don't hold it against them.

I just want to set your expectations going in. Don't expect it to be even close to fully functional. I do have high hopes it will get there though.

The politicization of Ruby is going swimmingly. This has apparently lead to Ruby Central kicking all the old volunteer maintainers from the community maintained RubyGems. The alleged reason is that Shopify forced their hand on the matter and it was justified after the fact with security.

This all appears to be a simple power grab as those who may return will be made to sign agreements and some are (allegedly) explicitly excluded from returning. Its only rumours as to why people would be excluded, but its probably a mix of personal beefs and developing alternative tooling that is perceived as a threat.

Now why did Shopify have this alleged power over Ruby Central?

The purported order of events is that this started all over a campaign against David Heinemeier Hansson (DHH), where sponsors had been successfully pressured into dropping Ruby Central after they let him talk at RailsConf(Archive). This then gave Shopify unparalleled leverage to force change as their final primary sponsor.

DHH is a successful and affluent software developer who notably created Ruby on Rails (I wonder what the "Rails" in RailsConf alludes to). His infractions are that he blogged about noticing demographic decline, not being approprietly pro DEI, being rich and so on.

He's also been fairly anti-cloud lately and pushing more and more for repatriating workloads in-house. This weakens a lot of big tech, since they're not making money off of you by gouging you for hosting and reduces their control over you. I might just be schizoposting but it's a plausible angle.

I'm 99% sure this is the right one. But I don't want to watch all the way through it again to make sure.

Anyway. He is decidedly anti-DEI. For these people that makes you "literally Hitler". Or in Drew Devaults words a "fascist".

Really though, he is just a moderately conservative tech guy. Anyway if you haven't seen this one, I think it's worth the watch.
