To the shock of absolutely no one Brodie Robertson made a video defending the decision to require rust in apt.

I would surprised if at some point if he doesn't decide to run defense for some breaking, unnecessary change, that absolutely no one asked for other than the dev of the project.

My theory is that "rewriting everything in Rust" creates the opportunity to do one or two of the following things and they're simply not saying the quiet part out loud (yet):
  • Phase out old neckbeards with nu-devs
    • old neckbeards:
      • Careful about feature updates, don't constantly break the tool for the users
      • Rely on well-curated dependencies and don't switch to bleeding edge unless there is a solid technical reason to do so
      • Keep the software project about the software, when they are activists they do it as a side-thing which does not affect the software
    • nu-devs
      • Constantly reinvent everything, break shit for everyone
      • Use hundreds of "left-pad"-style one-liner packages that are available through some non-curated language-specific package manager, putting the user at considerable risk through a massive surface area for supply-chain attacks
      • Constantly use the project as a soapbox for their incredibly retarded political activism, sometimes to the point of breaking the software to make a point, making sure nobody can fucking trust the entire project anymore
  • Replace GPL-licensed software with software licensed under proprietary-friendly licenses such at the MIT license

Promoting a new technology just to create a new market that you are on the ground floor of is a very common tactic in business. (Wind turbines/Green Energy is a classic example.) In this case, it's trannies who have experience with Rust trying to increase its market-share simply because they had a head-start with it and can thus lead the capture of whatever projects they inject it into.

Given how hostile and retarded trannies are. I'm considering moving to OpenMandriva for my OS, and maybe finally getting around to putting Astra on a partition, so long as I can get the dependencies for it.
