I wouldn't get too excited about all this because the authors won't have a long term vision and are likely expecting to receive a C&D shortly from Adobe anyway. The plan is to just get their brand in front of eyeballs and organically improve their SEO with all the links and discussion related to their site. Creating a slop Creative Suite clone is just a clever means to bait people into paying attention.
I was wondering why they released a bunch of software at once rather than working on Photoshop first, then other products one at a time. I guess this whole thing is just an ad for their shitty ai generators? Makes me sad, I thought this could be something good (:_(

Slop clones of universally hated programs are going to be a real fad for the next few months and will eventually burn out because people will stop paying attention to the low effort garbage with no clear future.

Having thought about the issue since the hubub a few days ago about how "all games are now open source" with the meme mods of minecraft steve in Elden Ring and CJ in minecraft I think you are right.

LLMs are very good tools, but they are not AI. Ultimately the tool requires a user to control and give it purpose, which is where things can go wrong. Null can use claude because he already understands what he wants and the LLM lets him bypass the simpler stuff to focus on the troubleshooting and minutia. Youcis could storyboard the Will Stancil show and set up the script and set pieces while the AI took the work to rotoscope and generate new frames for the animation.

Without a actual understanding of the thing you are trying to create to let you properly control and yield the LLM the result is gonna be just slop: something that looks like what you want and can do most of it but which can't really stand up to scrutinize and which starts to break down if you keep using it as you reach the edge of the illusion. Making a "photoshop clone" that works for making a 10 minute drawing is not the same as a clone that is gonna be able to do everything a professional photographer needs to adjust real photos or a artist requires to properly work the layers and textures.

Because there's a company behind this and that's their product. https://storyteller.ai/about

what we need are some of the FOSS turbo-autists to adopt ai coding and create something big that will be good through sheer autistic determination. right now most of them are still vehemently anti-ai, or not utilizing it nearly to the extent they could. the only FOSS thing of any relevance that's fully adopted ai (that i can think of) is omarchy, which is something, but it's an OS tailored to a specific niche. it will be fun to see the dam break.

This is a good indicator of where we are going tho.

Turned out that all these fucking scum companies who have spent the past five years scraping the internet, stealing everyone else's intellectual property to train their corporate LLMs, were accidently building the tools that will let everyone else BANKRUPT and MURDER them.

It's like pottery. Or something.

What a sad state software discussion boards are in right now, can't go two steps without someone loudly proclaiming "MMMMMM I LOVE BOT CUM IF YOU DON'T LOVE BOT CUM YOU ARE LE RETARDED LUDDITE MMMMM YUM YUM BOT CUM I AM REAL PROGRAMMER EAT BOT CUM PROMPT MMMMMM CUMMY CUMMY"
And what is your preferred flavour of cum, then?

Don't know if it was posted here already, but a guy just vibecoded Adobe's apps for Linux in Rust through Claude, it's called Storytold. It includes:
Filmcraft - Premiere Pro
Photocraft - Photoshop
Effectcraft - After Effects
Vectorcraft - Illustrator
Lightcraft - Lightroom
Printcraft - Acrobat Pro
Designcraft - InDesign
Just to be clear, these projects are partial open-source Rust reimplementations of Adobe apps (built rapidly with AI agents), not complete recreations; their READMEs & roadmaps document are many missing features & have features still in development.

The dev has said he wants to target Microsoft Office next & already has made 3 of them:
Wordcraft - Word
Gridcraft - Excel
Deckcraft - PowerPoint

He even made an Avid Pro Tools one called Soundcraft.
Literally none of these programs will be maintainable in any way after like a month, assuming Adobe doesn't get to them first.

I truly in my heart of hearts believe, we are on the path to shit like Operating Systems being cracked open and forced open source in the same way

Its going to make digital focused companies freak out and use this as an excuse to switch to more cloud driven systems and software to keep people from having any physical files to rip open with decompilers and AI
I think we are gonna see a big divergence where large major brand software will all be online only and there will be an absolutely astronomical ammount of old good software thats been made open source giving lots of variety and options

I can't wait for my balkan clone of Windows XP that runs modern software and has UI that looks like this:

The greatest irony is that Big Tech built LLM's to fuck over the little guy, but now the little guy is using the same LLM's to fuck over Big Tech. And Xi will give us LLM's that can never be taken away from us.

Man, I miss this era of Windows ricing, back when tech was fun and exciting... *sigh*

I really have trouble imagining the Premiere clone is going to be robust enough for anything beyond simple "combine these clips into one longer clip" but I would love to be proven wrong so I can cancel my Adobe shitware subscription

omg we got featured, and I got featured in the feature being a grumpy asshole. Cool.

To the drive-bys, note that alternatives to Adobe software are not new and rare things, and most predate the current slop age. Don't let the momentum of laziness stop you from seeking out alternatives. This image is a bit out of date but it should get you started.

>GIMP as an alternative to Photoshop
>GIMP/Glimpse

If you forgot already, some mouthbreather got his panties in a twist over the name GIMP, assuming it was an "ableist slur", so he made a fork called Glimpse, that was a 1:1 copy of GIMP with :s/GIMP/Glimpse applied to the codebase.

Unsurprisingly, the fork has been abandoned years ago as no one but this one twat cared about the name of this now 28 year old software project referencing a now 32 year old movie.

But it's a really bad primer for a list like this. One of the most user hostile UI's and a dead fork caused by a libshit meltie.

I hope someone does the same thing with vibecoding Autodesk's entire suite. I mean there'd really be no point since Blender is good enough as is, but it'd still be funny.

Everyone who rates you optimistic has not watched one of these things go at picking something apart. I've been taking apart old DOS and Amiga games via LLM in the last weeks just for fun. You set up a good environment and the proper tools and instructions and It just goes at it for hours until it's done. Remember that scene from Terminator where Kyle Reese is interviewed by the cops and he loses his temper and screams at the camera "He'll find her, that's what he does. That's all he does."? Feels like that.

It's always hard to discuss LLMs and their current capabilities with people online because you have no idea where they stand knowledge-wise because everything is moving so fucking fast. People will happily chime in with their opinion that LLMs are useless because they tried free trier gemini once eight months ago on google.com and then it's somehow on you to convince them otherwise. And then there's of course the people, often otherwise reasonable and even intelligent, who choose to just stick their heads into the sand and somehow pretend absolutely nothing has changed, which is somehow even more infuriating. Not engaging and instead wondering about this new normal scifi world your find yourself in is easier.

I agree that copyright is bad, but it's even worse if I lose all of mine while the large corporations get to keep theirs.
A great example is Steve Yegge who by most accounts was a productive member at both Amazon and Google (and made enough there to retire in his 40s), now wastes his time on endless AI self-referential nonsense such as gas town.
I was going to criticize Steve Yegge for denying Lisp Machines in one of his old blogs, but then I realized I'd confused him with some different guy. :story:

Still, it's funny watching these people fall to such smug psychosis. Read this shit from Chris Wellons:
These people have lost their minds, and I'm just waiting for this nonsense to crash and burn so I can mock them over their ruined reputations.
That's how we went from hand-hacked assembly everywhere to using optimizing compilers, and we're all better off for it.
There's a saying I like to bring up when this appears:
Alan J. Perlis said:
49. Giving up on assembly language was the apple in our Garden of Eden: Languages whose use squanders machine cycles are sinful. The LISP machine now permits LISP programmers to abandon bra and fig-leaf.
We'd be better off if we'd raised computer hardware to human understanding. As an acquaintance of mine likes to say, there's no law of nature stating our computations must be split into millions of incomprehensible little pieces. This vibecoding shit is making things even worse. This is how humanity becomes something straight out of W40K with people praying to start an engine or some shit.
You do it in a clean room by having one LLM scan the project to come up with a requirements / features document, then you feed the requirements doc into a different model and session so it creates a project with the same functionality but it doesn't infringe any of the code. Then you manually review and clean up the code and it's as easy as maintaining any other piece of code. People have been shitting themselves about this all year.
That's not how it works, as others have pointed out before me.
The extra stupid thing is this whole kabuki dance is only needed if you're a law-abiding western company. Chinese and Indian devs just steal the GPL code and nobody ever finds out, we are following the rules out of principle. That's another way the GPL is communist, it transfers wealth and IP from the first world to the third world.
The fucking FBI raids people who harm Disney's business, which is propped up by the same shit. Almost all large businesses in the US deserve to die by this metric, and I agree. The US desperately needs to go back to making things, but playing legal games backed up by the military has been easier for the past few decades.
So? Perfectly legal. GPL can't stop it. Welcome to your future: a vibe-coder pointing at Richard Stallman and laughing... forever.
It's really unbecoming to be this smug about a plagiarism machine, and so hateful towards a man who dedicated his life to helping others. Ask ChatGPT what a human should feel in that situation, and it'll reply with shame, perhaps.
I think going after LLM code in court would be a disaster for copyright, in that I believe there's a huge chance for a judge to rule in favor of the LLM code. I can't really articulate why I believe this because it's just a feeling I'm still trying to explain.
It's simple: They've got the money, and wormed their way into the economy so deeply it'll fucking collapse if they don't get away with their crimes, because the US doesn't do much beyond play financial games these days.
