It's much more common that the locusts hopping from project to project demanding a CoC against transphobia are the same ones demanding a "NO LLM CONTRIBUTIONS" policy. SOVL is a non-issue unless you're unemployed and desperately need something to fill the empty hours of your life. I want software that works, and a tranny who makes 4 commits a year because he has to write every line of code by hand but also cannot as he has the sads 350 days of the year does not produce software that works.
Apples and oranges, for every tranny CoC shitheap you have an OpenBSD or DWM or Gentoo. SOVL in software is difficult to quantify, you just know it when you see it. Even grimstone like Firefox, GNOME, the entire cybersecurity / pentester clique or others have lots of history and SOVL around them, having Claude cumcode you Adobe Clone #23412745 is entirely soulless. This cope of only engaging with anything beyond the immediate utility of a thing if you're unemployed/autistic/tinkertranny et cetera is wack because everyone should engage with things they like thoroughly, ideally via contribution or community engagement. People love to hand wave this away as them just being end-users that don't care and just want functional programs,, but Free Software lives and breathes because of user contributions. Remove the need for user contributions in favor of carte blanche cumcoding, and you remove the SOVL, remove the SOVL, and humanity is lesser for it. I do not know why this is such an alien concept to so many people.

and what of the cathedral model of development?
I prefer a bazaar where you have full code access and the potential for contribution by anyone, but merges are handled by core developers. This is how Guix works by the by (might not be the best example because the process for en-koshering big contributions or changes to the project (GCD) is overly bureaucratic, but it fits regardless). Granted, that puts the onus of maintaining code quality on the core devs and reviewers, so we may see more cathedrals pop up as AI contributions ramp up. Was it Ladybird that did that recently? I might be misremembering, there was some project that switched to a release-based model where you have sauce code but you can't contribute to freely.

AI is raping these types of developers hard right now, it may just be due to cheap tokens, but the ability to weaponize AI as an artificial indian who shits out nonsense onto any random project is going to burn maintainers out, especially if it gets better at making human-like nonsense or a jeet directing it can mangle the code into something that looks presentable form a glance. we also now got some pretty decent models you can local host on consumer-grade gpus, so this may be never going away. even if we rangeban every turd worlder from contributing, the AI agent acts as the perfect replica artificial indian when set on autopilot.

I really wonder what is going to happen when the cost of tokens gets cranked up. It's gotta happen eventually, that enshittification is like the big-tech playbook. The best case scenario is that big tech doesn't get too greedy and everything gets a bit more expensive, but still reasonably affordable, or there are good enough local models and enough people who are working on free software that have hardware powerful enough to run local models that everything just sort of stabilizes. If there are black hat groups with access to models that can find and deploy exploits and the foss developers don't have the funding or resources to have agents harden their projects for them, things could get tough for foss devs. My pet worry is that more secure programs and services (bank websites, tax websites and tax programs, government websites, etc.) will start fucking with people who aren't using "trusted" programs or operating systems -- ie. stuff that's essentially owned by big tech.

LLM agents will be in an arms race to filter out nonsense commits on one side, and create junk commits that are so close to being useful without being useful that it passes LLM filters on the other side. Pottery.

LLMs are getting more and more efficient, smaller models can do now what e.g. six months ago only real big models could do. The general token/intelligence price trend on API is downwards, not upwards. Frontier token prices are 88% down vs. launch of GPT4 in 2023. It's kinda true that the pure upper echelon of models don't really seem to get reliably cheaper outside of subs, but the models slightly below definitively do and they are quite capable.

Every time I touch Claude it's $10-20. I stick to local models unless I need to spring for Claude for a serious problem.

Enterprise token prices are quite expensive now, due to a fuckup on my end i set an opus agent to organize my inbox and racked up $16 in token spend before the task failed. It's already forcing discipline and causing pressure on people's usage bc qwen et all are often good enough and much cheaper. Claude/Chatgpt consumer subs are getting $20-$50 of subsidized token spend every month i think. If you look up news articles every tech company has a quarter where they tell everyone to tokenmax then they freak out and pull back and start doing things like banning AI in email comms

Totally, the rate pressure from OWMs are forcing them to offer efficient models, Luna 6 is very cheap and Claude is trying with Sonnet 5.5. My takeaway is that things will be in flux for a few years, tracking the horse race between frontier models minute by minute is only useful if you're making deployment decisions

This place has a sizeable clanker fetish community simping for jewish and crypto jewish scams. It does make sense though, given they use the same rhetorics as a certain cult worshipping a demented shabbos goy boomer mesmerized by slop. They clearly know nothing about, nor have ever been involved in software development.

The same corporations promoting tranny CoCs, social engineering and enshittification of important FOSS projects are the same corporations heavily promoting slop. That sperg Torvalds, the virtually retired faggot receiving millions from Intel, Google, Redhat, etc has started simping for it too, the final nail in the "year of the Linux desktop" coffin.
Google, Amazon, Microsoft funnelling billions into slop... Open source irreversibly damaged... Go back to paying premium for proprietary corpo jeetware... Also this: https://slashdot.org/story/25/06/03...00-indian-employees-pretending-to-be-chatbots

Posting only because this guy used to call himself a "code poet":

One thousand Internet years ago, when I was in my late teens, I would describe myself as a “code poet”. I was relentlessly mocked for this as what the Youth would today call “being cringe”, and at the time was referred to as “pretentious”.

This guy doesn't seem to understand that functional art (commissioned portraits, background music, etc.) have aesthetic qualities that are essential to making them work as products. A commissioned portrait has to look good enough and background music has to fit the mood and be something that the listener doesn't mind (which may culture-dependent). Code can look like absolute ass and be fine because the point of code is to run: aesthetic quality is not an essential part of code.

wait so you're telling me that the jews put little semites on my GPU when it runs my Qwen 3 model?? (:_(

aesthetic quality is not an essential part of code.

This is not the Programming thread so I'll assume you're not a programmer, but as one, I'll say that this is not true, at least to the extent that the code needs to be easily parseable and understandable by a human. If you intend humans to never be a part of the programming loop anyway, then fine, have it vomit out whatever slop it wants. But there's a reason coding standards exist and are something like 90% identical from language to language in the same family (in other words, Java and PHP are languages with C-like syntax and OOP, and their commonly-used coding standards are nearly identical (don't "um actually" this you know what I mean)) - it means that the code gets written in a clean, easily-understandable, and, yes, aesthetic manner that helps even people who might not be familiar with that language's particulars easily pick it up.

Opus 5.5 does not produce code slop anymore (in 99% of use cases). You can vibe code something and the code quality will be better than what a human would have made. At worst it is misdirected, aka your prompt was bad. The term slop does still apply to images, video, audio, etc.

Every program, from time to time, requires change. If you write your code in a write-only manner then change becomes difficult/expensive. So yes, aesthetics is in fact an essential quality of code and always has been. Just because you commit a program and release it does not mean you'll never touch it again.
