They should.

Microsoft is in many ways a far gentler beast than it used to be.

For starters, there are some niches Windows just cannot cover, at least not very well, and to do so means they'd have to start over from square one from a programming standpoint, and that means throwing backwards compatibility down the toilet, which they'd rather pass a boulder sized kidney stone before they'd even contemplate doing so.

Second, Linux and it's related entities are far too popular and useful to kill, despite everything they tried.

Third, Microsoft's ruthless reputation for being the gelatinous cube of software developers has not gone unnoticed legally, and the shit they pulled back with IE still has not been forgotten.


In short, I'm pretty sure MS will just add Github to their portfolio, leave the essentials in place, and at most maybe provide a way to hook Github into Microsoft services if one so desires.

Gitlab is actually really cool, and I highly recommend it. I am worried about mass amounts of people leaving Github for Gitlab, though. Especially if some of those people are the morons who caused all of the CoC drama; I don't want to go through that cycle again.

I remain eternally paranoid that Microsoft will attempt to take over Linux and related projects from the inside, especially once Torvalds is gone.

I'm not surprised that she missed the fundamental difference between those two scenarios, considering that the quality of her code has alsways suggested that she's near retarded. An artist who works for exposure is only doing so because they have too; they'd rather be getting paid. Most people who make non-trivial contributions to open source projects don't mind not getting paid because they treat it like a hobby. Also, not really sure what Kat is hoping to accomplsih here, since her general shitty attitude that causes her to act like a bratty teenager all of the time makes me want to prevent more women from going into tech fields.

Heh, no, she doesn't have a good point. I don't think she's doing it for the gender issue, I do think she's reeing about corporatism.

Here's the thing: sometimes people are perfectly happy to get paid in non-monetary ways. Sometimes people contribute to open source for fun or pride or sometimes to build up a resume. Sometimes people contribute because they use the software, and they're fine with the corporations getting free work if the work also scratches their own itch.

And then sometimes people aren't OK with giving out free work corporations, and those people don't contribute. And that's fine too.

What's less fine, as far as I'm concerned, is being a salty, petty bitch because not everyone feels the incessant need to stick it to the evil corporations.

Y'know, there's a way to enforce making sure contributors to open source projects get compensated. Basically, you release the source, but you make it so people have to pay to get support or maybe advanced features. Then you use that money to pay contributors. Kinda like a... company. Wow, funny how that works.

Her point is REEEE REEEE only FUCKING WHITE MALES have the time to do work for free so all us trannies/cunts/dykes/losers can't do that because we're too busy collecting welfare and patreons. When the fact is they have nothing to contribute at all because none of them have any talents or skills whatsoever. All they contribute is parasitism and REEEEing.

It's just a thinly disguised patriarchy rant.

Update: 04:26 UTC. Gentoo has regained control of the the Gentoo Github Organization. We are currently working with Github on a procedure for resolution. Please continue to refrain from using code from the Gentoo Github Organization. Development of Gentoo primarily takes place on Gentoo operated hardware (not on github) and remains unaffected. We continue to work with Github on establishing a timeline of what happened and we commit to sharing this with the community as soon as we can.
Today 28 June at approximately 20:20 UTC unknown individuals have gained control of the Github Gentoo organization, and modified the content of repositories as well as pages there. We are still working to determine the exact extent and to regain control of the organization and its repositories. All Gentoo code hosted on github should for the moment be considered compromised.
This does NOT affect any code hosted on the Gentoo infrastructure. Since the master Gentoo ebuild repository is hosted on our own infrastructure and since Github is only a mirror for it, you are fine as long as you are using rsync or webrsync from gentoo.org.
Also, the gentoo-mirror repositories including metadata are hosted under a separate Github organization and likely not affected as well.
All Gentoo commits are signed, and you should verify the integrity of the signatures when using git.
