What do you think has caused our overmedicated society? What's a good solution to it?

I've noticed overmedication things myself. Risperdal, for instance, seems to be a very common prescription for irritability in autism, but every autist I've seen on risperdal is the dumbest, near-lolcow person you'd ever see. I think certain medications don't even need approval for their causes, such as risperdal, which would cut down immediately on some of this behavior that these children think is OK, alongside parents not coddling this type of shit.

As for treating it, I'm not sure. Opioids seem like a good start, but at this point, I don't think we have a good solution for giving medications out like candy.

Boredom. In first world countries, our privileged lack of need to struggle to survive has forced our brains to invent imaginary problems like anxiety and depression. It’s why nobody in the olden days ever struggled with these conditions.
Yeah, that's why "dying of sorrow" isn't a term that can be traced back to the ancient Greeks.

Literary hyperbole is not proof of imaginary illnesses in a pre-priviledge society.
I don't mean literary hyperbole. I mean people on the historical record (esp. in England and Japan) dying from sorrow: languishing, refusing to take either food or water, until death, throwing themselves from the ramparts, etc. Textbook cases of suicidal depression.

Anxiety and Depression is a bit of a difficult thing, because I think it's overdiagnosed today. Plus today we live in the type of society where if you have a problem, theres a pill that can probably fix it.

For other mental issues, illnesses and trauma however. Back in the olden days, you would just kill yourself, become a beggar and die of disease, of if some traumatic event happened to you, your brain would attempt to adapt, and your behavior would change accordingly.

It's especially interesting watching some of the advice TV shows from Asia, where mental illness isn't really acknowledged. People come on because a family member is usually acting in some strange way, and in the process of solving the problem, you watch children instinctively flinch away from their parents due to regular beatings, have poor self esteem and anxiety because of sexual harassment from family members. Mothers affecting the whole family because they have experienced some trauma thats affecting their behavior in cooking and cleaning. If things get bad enough Asian families are at least close enough to allow you to live with an aunt or something.

Basically you get to see how families functioned before social workers and mental health professionals. People either adapted to the situation, or they killed themselves.

Back in the old days, you were just weak of character.

And was there any tangible, physical malady impeding their ability to eat or drink?
Well, after the first couple days, physical weakness. But no, otherwise I wouldn't bring it up. Generally, it would be one half of a married couple of rank who lost the other to violence (mostly women).
EDIT:
That’s the kind of old-timey ignorance I was playfully invoking.
For something to be a joke, it has to be funny first.

Because medication is like the credit card of healthcare. It's the quick and easy way to get what you want NOW, but has a shit ton of side effects/consequences.

Have high blood pressure because you're a fat fuck? Instead of losing weight which would lower it (because we know you won't) take this pill instead.

Got ADHD and can't pay attention in class? Instead of disciplining your kid and having them taught therapeutic methods to be able to deal with it, throw a pill in their mouths to make them easier to deal with.

Back in the old days if you crossdressed you where just a sissy fag pervert. Now it means you are a woman trapped in man's body. When he are all boomers and the white population is well below 50% what will mental illnesses look like then? For real?
